Phase drift

Phase changes as small as 2 tr x 10 rad have been detected 269) by using a null method where phase drifts of the apparatus are compensated by a calibrated and controllable dielectric in cavity B. The response time of this laser interferometer is less than 5 psec when operated at 3.39 pm and repetitively pulsed plasmas can therefore be investigated. Gerardo etal. 270) even reached a time resolution of... [Pg.52]

In order to provide a means for the precise recalculation of nitrogen chemical shifts reported since 1972, it is necessary to have accurate values of the differences in the screening constants between neat CH3N02 and the large number of reference compounds which have so far been used. Table VII shows the results of precise, 4N measurements (61) which have been carried out in concentric spherical sample and reference containers in order to eliminate bulk susceptibility effects on the shifts. Since the technique adopted (61, 63) involves the accumulation of a large number of individually calibrated spectra with the subsequent use of a full-lineshape analysis by the differential saturation method, (63) the resulting random errors comprise those from minor temperature variations, phase drifts, frequency instability, sweep nonlinearity, etc. so that systematic errors should be insignificant as compared with random errors. [Pg.140]

If we continue to increase p, the stable and unstable fixed points eventually coalesce in a saddle-node bifurcation at // = 1. For p > 1 both fixed points have disappeared and now phase-locking is lost the phase difference 0 increases indefinitely, corresponding to phase drift (Figure 4.5.1c). (Of course, once 0 reaches 2jt the oscillators are in phase again.) Notice that the phases don t separate at a uniform rate, in qualitative agreement with the experiments of Hanson (1978) 0 increases most slowly when it passes under the minimum of the sine wave in Figure 4.5.1 c, at 0 = r/2, and most rapidly when it passes under the maximum at 0 = -kI2. ... [Pg.105]

Another type of gravity-flow, vertical contactor with a rotating axial shaft is the rotating disk contactor developed by the Shell Development Company [R1, R2], shown schematically in Fig. 4.28. It consists of alternate annular stator disks attached to the outer shell and circular rotor disks attached to the rotating shaft. Rotation of the central shaft, at peripheral speeds up to 6 m/s, provides controlled dispersion of the two phases and sets up a toroidal flow pattern within each stator compartment. There are no settling chambers, and the two phases drift past each other in countercurrent flow. [Pg.206]

Several instniments have been developed for measuring kinetics at temperatures below that of liquid nitrogen [81]. Liquid helium cooled drift tubes and ion traps have been employed, but this apparatus is of limited use since most gases freeze at temperatures below about 80 K. Molecules can be maintained in the gas phase at low temperatures in a free jet expansion. The CRESU apparatus (acronym for the French translation of reaction kinetics at supersonic conditions) uses a Laval nozzle expansion to obtain temperatures of 8-160 K. The merged ion beam and molecular beam apparatus are described above. These teclmiques have provided important infonnation on reactions pertinent to interstellar-cloud chemistry as well as the temperature dependence of reactions in a regime not otherwise accessible. In particular, infonnation on ion-molecule collision rates as a ftmction of temperature has proven valuable m refining theoretical calculations. [Pg.813]

A thermodynamically stable system conserves energy. Thus, by monitoring the potential energy one can confirm that a stable (and productive) phase of the simulation has begun. Absence of systematic drift in computed averages is often used as a check on the stability of a Monte Carlo trajectory. Fluctuations in the energy... [Pg.98]

Monomer compositional drifts may also occur due to preferential solution of the styrene in the mbber phase or solution of the acrylonitrile in the aqueous phase (72). In emulsion systems, mbber particle size may also influence graft stmcture so that the number of graft chains per unit of mbber particle surface area tends to remain constant (73). Factors affecting the distribution (eg, core-sheU vs "wart-like" morphologies) of the grafted copolymer on the mbber particle surface have been studied in emulsion systems (74). Effects due to preferential solvation of the initiator by the polybutadiene have been described (75,76). [Pg.203]

Copolymers are typically manufactured using weU-mixed continuous-stirred tank reactor (cstr) processes, where the lack of composition drift does not cause loss of transparency. SAN copolymers prepared in batch or continuous plug-flow processes, on the other hand, are typically hazy on account of composition drift. SAN copolymers with as Httle as 4% by wt difference in acrylonitrile composition are immiscible (44). SAN is extremely incompatible with PS as Httle as 50 ppm of PS contamination in SAN causes haze. Copolymers with over 30 wt % acrylonitrile are available and have good barrier properties. If the acrylonitrile content of the copolymer is increased to >40 wt %, the copolymer becomes ductile. These copolymers also constitute the rigid matrix phase of the ABS engineering plastics. [Pg.507]
