Effect of Alignment

The 180° twisted Heilmeier displays show switch-off behavior similar to r-cells. It takes a long relaxation time to return to the quiescent state after a very fast decay to an intermediate level. This long relaxation is undesirable, and a 180° Heilmeier shutter can function reasonably only after using a holding voltage similar to that of r-cells. [Pg.279]

A non-electrochemical technique which has been employed to alter the physical characteristics of a number of polymers is that of stress orientation [26, 27], in which the material is stressed whilst being converted to the desired form. This has the effect of aligning the polymer chains and increasing the degree of order in the material, and is obviously most applicable to materials which can be produced via a precursor polymer. With Durham polyacetylene (Section 4.2.1) increases in length in excess of a factor of twenty have been achieved, with concomitant increases in order, as shown by X-ray diffraction and by measurements of the anisotropy of the electrical conductivity perpendicular and parallel to the stretch direction. [Pg.11]

The effects of alignment errors in the polarizer, analyzer, and compensator angles, and the retardation of compensator, can be eliminated by taking the average solutions A = zl,74 and T = f, /4, respectively. It is a big advantage of null ellipsometiy that this method exists to eliminate most of the... [Pg.455]

Effect of alignment layer conductivity on the instability of surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal devices. Figures 1 and 2, TC. Chieu and K.H. Yang, Applied Physics Letters, 56 (14), p. 1326 (1990). Reproduced by permission of the American Institute of Physics. [Pg.278]

The effect of alignment of the metal atom electron has been probed by Rettner and Zare [54] in somewhat more direct fashion in the reaction of Ca(4s4p Ip ) with CI2 and other reactants. Aligned Ca( P ) was prepared by polarized laser excitation. For the O2 reaction, chemiluminescence and chemi-ionization cross sections were found to be largest for n approach of the 4p electron, suggesting that these channels are reached through the B2 surface. [Pg.164]

Smaller values of produce samples with better-aligned rods. This approach was previously used by Du et and Benham et to study the effects of alignment in 2D carbon nanotube/polymer composite systems. [Pg.336]
