The chewing of betel quid ingredients in Asia is often associated with high incidences of oral, pharyngeal and esophageal tumors in man. Ranadive et al. (1979) reported that an undefined mixture of betel nut, beteT Teaf, lime and catechu produced both oral and gastric tumors in Syrian hamsters. Since this mixture produced lesions, subsequent fractionation experiments demonstrated that betel quid with tobacco and betel quid alone could serve as a promoter of stomach lesions. These experiments tend to verify, in laboratory animals, the possible causal relationship of betel quid chewing and cancer in humans. [Pg.95]

JAF is a highly vascular and locally invasive tumor. It is usually originated from the superolateral aspect of the choana, near the spheno-palatine foramen, hut may also arise more medially, near the vomer, from the pharyngeal roof where it involves the body of the sphenoid hone, or from the adjacent pterygoid plates. [Pg.248]

Internal carotid artery (IGA) may supply the JAF without having intracranial portion of the tumor. However, if angiographic tumor blush is located above the skull base on AP and/or lateral views and has vascular supply from the IGA branches and/or from ascending pharyngeal and/or proximal internal maxillary arteries, it might represent intracranial extension of the tumor. However, the subarachnoid space extension of tumor is exclusively... [Pg.249]

Regarding the ECA branches embolization. Special precaution has to be taken to identify potential anastomosis between branches of the internal maxillary and ascending pharyngeal arteries and the intracranial or intraorbital arteries, and internal carotid artery supply to the tumor. [Pg.251]

Although it is often symptomatic, primary HIV infection is seldom recognized, because symptoms are nonspecific, consisting of fever, malaise, generalized lymphadenopathy, pharyngitis, diarrhea, and rash, sometimes associated with abnormal laboratory results. After primary HIV infection, a chronic asymptomatic phase of variable duration ensues with symptomatic disease usually developing when CD4 cell count falls to below 350 ceU/mm, and characterized by the occurrence of several AIDS- or non-AIDS-associated events (mainly infections or tumors). In the absence of treatment, death is unavoidable. However, there is a minority of patients, the so-called elite... [Pg.204]
