Nomenclature. The terms active agent and pharmacon designate substances that are capable of modifying life processes irrespective of whether the effects elicited may benefit or harm the organisms concerned. By this definition, a toxin is also a pharmacon. Taken in a narrower sense, a pharmacon means a substance that is used for therapeutic purposes. An unequivocal term for such a substance is medicinal drug. [Pg.333]

When tablet formulations are made, usually different quality criteria have to be met, e.g., a high crushing strength, a low disintegration time, a pre-set dissolution profile. A tablet consists normally of the pharmacon (the pharmacologically active compound the drug) and excipients. Hence, a tablet can be made with different relative amounts of excipients (a mixture composition) and this creates room for optimizing a tablet... [Pg.2]

Definition 1 (Paul Ehrlich, 1909) A pharmacophore is a molecular framework that carries (phoros) the essential features responsible for a drug s (pharmacon) biological activity [1]. [Pg.325]

International classification C08B37/00, C12N9/96, C12N11/10 The invention relates to an auxiliary substance to accompany an active substance, such as a pharmacon. The auxiliary substance has a stabilizing action and a positive influence on the bioavailability of the active substance within pharmaceutical preparations. The auxiliary substance is based on a fructan (inulin of degree of polymerization (DP) over 6), obtained from Jerusalem artichoke or other sources. [Pg.423]

Owing to the greater sensitivity of PBC patients to pharmaceutical preparations, different pharmacons, e. g. phenothiazines, contraceptives, oestrogens and anabolic steroids, can reinforce cholestasis and the clinical symptoms, thus aggravating the course of disease. Gallstones are frequently detectable (35-40%) as a rule, they are pigment gallstones. Administration of clofibrate is con-... [Pg.647]

The prognosis of cirrhosis caused by toxins (alcohol or medicament abuse, chemical agents, iron storage, etc.) is usually markedly improved by eliminating the causal noxa. Recognition and treatment of secondary immuno-reactions, which may occur concomitantly, are also important. As a result of such reactions, the prognos-tically favourable effect of abstention (e.g. alcohol, pharmacons) may be reduced unless adequate countermeasures with drugs are possible. [Pg.740]
