Composition of mixtures

The composition of mixtures can be characterised in different ways. For a quantitative description the following quantities have to be introduced. [Pg.66]

The mass fraction A is the mass MA of component A over the total mass M in a volume element within a phase13  [Pg.66]

The mole fraction xA is the number of moles NA of component A over the total number of moles N in the mixture in a given phase  [Pg.66]

13The letter K under the summation sign means that the sum is taken over all the components [Pg.66]

These quantities in a composition are not independent from each other. To find a relationship between the mass and mole fractions, we multiply (1.147) by the molar mass MA = MA/NA of component A. This gives [Pg.67]

Chemists need to be able to specify the composition of mixtures quantitatively. For example, a chemist may need to monitor a pollutant, administer a dosage, or transfer a known amount of a solute. In this section we examine the properties and types of mixtures as well as how to use the molar concentration of a dissolved substance to analyze solutions quantitatively. [Pg.76]

Hyphenation of chromatographic separation techniques (SFC, HPLC, SEC) with NMR spectroscopy as a universal detector is one of the most powerful and time-saving new methods for separation and structural elucidation of unknown compounds and molecular compositions of mixtures [171]. Most of the routinely used NMR flow-cells have detection volumes between 40... [Pg.454]

The SOM is mainly used as a qualitative tool, to identify groups rather than to provide some numerical estimate of similarity. Nevertheless, these methods also show promise as quantitative tools. Recent unpublished work by Leung and Cartwright4 on the fluorescence of dyes has shown that the SOM can be used as a sensitive way to determine quantitatively the composition of mixtures containing several fluorescent species. When a sample of unknown composition is fed into the trained map, the node to which the sample points indicates the concentration of each species by the value of each of the different weights (Figure 3.31). [Pg.91]

We shall use the data of Mato et al. [2] for the vapor pressure and vapor composition of mixtures of methyl tert-butyl ether [1] and chloroform (2) at 313.15 K to illustrate the procedures used to calculate as a function of composition. These data are plotted in Figure 17.3. [Pg.388]

Thermodynamics is the branch of science dealing with the energetics of substances and processes. It describes the tendency of processes to take place spontaneously, the effects of external conditions, and the effects of the composition of mixtures on such processes. Thermodynamics is generally capable of correlat-... [Pg.54]

Other chemical studies did not find sex or seasonal differences in the composition of mammalian scents. No sex differences in the composition of mixtures of volatile compounds from glands have been found in the brushtailed possum, Trichosurus vulpecula, for example. The same profiles of low-molecular-weight branched carboxylic acids were found in paracloacal gland secretions of males and females (Woolhouse etal., 1994). Branched carboxylic acids also occurred in the preorbital gland secretion of a female sika deer [Ccrvus nippon) (Wood, 2004). Comparisons between the compositions of secretions in different, related species permit assumptions about functional adaptations and possible evolutionary pathways. Such comparisons are available for five Mustek species (Brinck etal., 1983), and three species of hyenas (Buglass etal., 1990). [Pg.32]

The aim of the present study was to find whether differences could be detected in the compositions of mixture of volatile compounds sampled from the root zone of two different cultivars of barley. To have a reasonable base for a relevant genetic variation in the plant material, two cultivars with different adaptation to acid soils were selected. The sampling was done from young plants, as the establishment of the rhizosphere microflora is of importance in early stages of plant development. [Pg.77]

The explosive properties of mixtures with ammonium nitrate depend on the quantitative relationship between the oxidizing agent and the explosive or combustible substance. According to Parisot and Laffitte s [9, 47] investigations the explosive properties of mixtures of aromatic nitro compounds with ammonium nitrate vary with the change in composition of the system in an almost rectilinear manner. The graph in Fig. 69 shows how the rate of detonation depends on the composition of mixtures of tetryl or picric acid with ammonium nitrate. T. Urbanski et al. [48] also obtained a rectilinear relationship for nitrostarch mixtures with ammonium or sodium nitrate (Fig. 71, p. 265). [Pg.259]

The explosive properties of nitrostarch mixtures (containing 12.7% of nitrogen) with ammonium or sodium nitrates have been studied by T. Urbanski et al. [48]. Values for rate of detonation of mixtures with a density of 1.0 are given in Fig. 71. They conform to Laffitte s rule that the variation in rate of detonation with the composition of mixtures with ammonium nitrate is almost rectilinear. [Pg.264]
