In 1995, the National Statistics Bureau in China reported 49,311 pesticide poisoning cases (accidents and suicides) in 27 provinces, including 3204 deaths. Of these, 15,000 cases occuiTed during occupational pest control activities of which 91% involved OPs and a fatality rate of 0.5% (75 cases). The reporting system was only set up in 1992 and needs improving some areas have not established a reporting system while in other ai eas reporting is limited. It is... [Pg.23]

B. thurigiensis is a common Gram-positive, spore-forming soil bacterium that produces inclusion bodies, microcrystalline clusters of many different proteins. These crystalline proteins, called 5-endotoxins, are the ion channel toxins that are sold commercially for pest control. Most such endotoxins are protoxins, which are inactive until cleaved to smaller, active proteins by proteases in the gut of a susceptible insect. One such crystalline protoxin. [Pg.275]

Major steps included, for example, plant production, transport, processing and retail. Each major step was subdivided into activities called substeps , which were defined in common categories. For example, the major step transport from processor to retailer could contain substeps in the following categories certification/inspection management labour packaging/labelling equipment pest control contact to supplier/customer. [Pg.500]

The chemical found to be the most effective to date for the control of the mealy bugs is dimefox (bisdimethylaminofluorophosphine oxide). This is the active ingredient of the commercial product Hanane produced by Pest Control, Ltd., London, which holds a contract for investigation and control of swollen shoot viruses. Hanane is applied to the soil around the roots of the trees and a very significant reduction in the mealy bug population has been obtained by this method. [Pg.23]

Prior to construction of the Ft. Eustis pest control facility, TRADOC requested the U.S. Army Medical Bioengineering Research and Development Laboratory (USAMBRDL) to investigate the feasibility of using an activated carbon filtration/absorption system to treat the pesticide-laden wastewater. The final system design was to 1) not be manpower intensive 2) not require extensive analytical monitoring, and 3) be compatible with both the types and quantities of pesticide wastes produced by a typical pest control facilty. The initial research was funded jointly by EPA and TRADOC. [Pg.127]

An inexpensive commercial carbon filtration system (Car-bolator) was found to have considerable potential in solving the waste treatment problem at pest control facilities. The Carbolator operates by the recirculation of wastewater through a bed of activated carbon. [Pg.127]

Sometimes the severity of a pest problem increases until the gardener must either actively control the problem or lose yield and quality. Following the basic principles of pest control will make control easier, more effective and less damaging to non-target organisms. [Pg.14]
