Personality typing

In terms of matching mentors with mentees, BAT takes the view that there should be balance between the similar and dissimilar personalities or backgrounds of the two parties. Compatibility depends on the individuals personality type, learning, and communication style. 

Those patients presenting with atypical symptoms of depression (i.e., rejection-sensitivity, hypersomnia, hyperphagia, and hysteroid personality types] were confirmed as a unique subgroup responsive to MAOls including phenelzine (Liebowitz et al. 1988]. There are indications that atypical symptomatology may also be responsive to the RlMAs such as moclobemide (Lonnqvist et al. 1994 Paykel 1995] however, results are preliminary.

Of much wider relevance to human behaviour, however, is the model of preferences that underpins the Myers-Brlggs Personality Type Indicator (Myers, 1980). The indicator is a questionnaire which diagnoses your personality type on the basis of four fundamental preferences. It is increasingly being used as a tool for diagnostic purposes in personnel selection, counselling and management development.

In deciding whether or not to do anything about your present use of time, you are likely to be influenced by your personality. Different personality types have very differing attitudes to time. Your temperament , as indicated by your Myers-Briggs type (see Chapter 2), colours your view of time - its importance to you and whether you tend to focus on past, present or future. 

Often types are constructed from two or more divergent aspects of human behaviour, for example people-oriented-ness vs production-orlentedness , or perceiving vs judging as in the Myers-Briggs personality types described in Chapter 2. 

It is interesting to note that there may be susceptible personality types for substance abuse. For example, it has been estimated that around 10% of known cocaine abusers have attention deficit disorder. Sometimes the administration of ritalin will help in fighting the abuse. 

Teenagers cite numerous motivations for their use of marijuana, and researchers have generated an equal number of hypotheses to explain what may lie behind its use. To better understand the teenage thought and decision-making processes regarding drug use, much discussion has focused on two important predictive factors personality type and peer and parental influences.

Combinations of these preferences result in 16 distinct personality types. Understanding characteristics unique to each personality type provides an insight on how they influence an individual s way of communicating and interacting with others. 

Successful perfumers represent a rather wide range of personality types, but is seems fair to say that a balanced disposition is optimal (1) a predilection for the patient, persistent, and essentially lonely effort that the creation of a fragrance requires, balanced by the gregariousness needed for the give-and-take that is at the heart of a successful team effort (2) the reliance upon the perfumer s own aesthetic intuitions in their pursuit of the creative effort, tempered by a sensitivity toward the expectations of clients and consumers who may have very different tastes and (3) the high standards and perfectionism that it takes to create fragrances of exceptional quality, coupled with the realism needed to live within the limitations inherent in nearly every practical assignment. 

There also are certain individual personality types that if coupled with the common traits of health care professionals lend themselves to even greater risks of burnout. For instance, health care professionals who have a Type A personality or an obsessive-compulsive personality may be further predisposed to burnout. Persons with obsessive-compulsive personalities cannot accept that the world is imperfect and will strive to compensate by gaining a measure of control over anything they can. Toropov (1997) proposed a second conflict personality model a four square model that includes four main personality types the sharpshooter, the lone ranger, the professor, and the cheerleader (Table 8.3). Toropov suggests that by mirroring a personality to a specific personality type, you can more effectively manage conflicts with them.
