Most managers already have a considerable awareness of the world around them, indeed they have to in order to do their job. They are aware too of the need for action in certain areas. This awareness can of course form the starting point of a development project. But if you want to explore something entirely new you will have to extend your awareness. The stages in this process are set out in Figure 4.2, which essentially is an elaboration of the Myers-Briggs process of perceiving . 

The diagram again emphasizes the need to bring into play each polarity of the Myers-Briggs choices, both thinking and feelings, and not to allow preference for one or the other to distort one s Judgement. 

We all have preferences, like the Myers-Briggs preferences described in Chapter 2, for learning in different ways. These learning preferences have been described by David Kolb (1984). 

In deciding whether or not to do anything about your present use of time, you are likely to be influenced by your personality. Different personality types have very differing attitudes to time. Your temperament , as indicated by your Myers-Briggs type (see Chapter 2), colours your view of time - its importance to you and whether you tend to focus on past, present or future.

It has been suggested that projects, in the category leading to a new business or new direchons for the company, that are lead in the early stages by specific individuals who exhibit breakthrough creativity, as measured by the Myers-Briggs creativity index (see Section C, 1.5.1), show a much higher success rate [D-16].
