Several intramolecular Heck reactions involve aryl halides cyclizing onto indole rings. Grigg first described the simple Heck cyclizations of 254 and 255 [270], and this was followed by similar Heck reactions reported by Kozikowski and Ma on the bromide corresponding to 254 and the IV-benzylindole 256 [271,272]. These investigators also observed cyclization to the C-3 position in a Heck reaction of indole 257, and they prepared a series of peripheral-type benzodiazepine receptors 258 using this chemistry. For example, 258 (n = 3, R = n-Pr) is obtained in 81% yield.

Zhang and coworkers reported a successful synthesis of the PET ligand [ F]DAA1106 (42) from diaryliodonium salt 41 with the radioactive anion (Scheme 7.14) [79]. The electron-rich 4-methoxyphenyl is essential as the second aromatic substituent in iodonium salt 41 the analogous phenyliodonium salt gave the desired product 42 in only 3% yield. Compound 42 is used as a PET ligand for imaging a peripheral-type benzodiazepine receptor [79]. 

The mitochrondrial peripheral-type benzodiazepine receptor (PTBR) is a multimeric complex comprising three snbnnits, namely an 18 KDa isoqninoline crrrboxamine-binding protein (IBP), a 34 KDa voltage-dependent anion channel and a 30 KDa adenine nucleotide carrier (McEnery et al., 1992).
