Performance-related impairments

Of course, one caveat for all the aforementioned studies is that they were performed in nonimpaired animals. However, R065-7199 improves scopolamine-induced deficits in this task (37) and recent data from Foley et al. (102) showed that chronic treatment with SB-271046 (once daily, 40 d) improved the age-related impairment in spatial learning and memory in 20-mo-old Wistar rats, an effect also seen in aged Fisher 344 rats (103). Further testing of 5-htg receptor antagonists in glutamate-deficiency models and neurodevelopment-deficiency models is suggested. 

Alcohol affects just about every capacity that we have, and performance deteriorations have been documented for just about every perceptual, attentional, decision, memory, and psychomotor task that has been evaluated. In fact, alcohol effects are so pervasive and consistent that the World Health Organization recommends that alcohol-related impairment serve as a benchmark for other impairments (Willette and Walsh, 1983). As might be e q>ected, in general there is a direct dose-response relationship so that the amount of impairment is directly related to the amount of alcohol that enters the blood. The impairing effects can be demonstrated at very low alcohol levels and as the amount of alcohol in the blood rises, tiie number of functions that are impaired and degree of impairment increases (Moskowitz Mid Robinson, 1988 Moskowitz and Fiorentino, 2000 Ogden and Moskowitz, 2004). 

One class of antidepressants that has yielded consistent findings is antihistamines. While most early antihistamines (known as 1 generation) had been shown to impair driving related skills, a review of 130 experimental studies revealed that only one fifth of them found impaired performance with 2" generation antihistamines, Mid only ten percent of the studies that evaluated actual driving performance obtained drug-related impairments (Moskowitz and Wilkinson, 2003). 

In general the prospect of working without silicate is regarded as a major advantage because the padding and washing-off of sodium silicate places considerable stresses on the machinery and on effluent treatment. However, the use of silicate in no way impairs the performance of Levafix dyes. Six optimised alkali recipes for this system are shown in Table 12.17, whilst Table 12.18 shows the relation between pad liquor pH, batching time and pad liquor stability. 

The value of PET for predicting clinical outcomes is complex, since the relevant end points include LV function, symptoms, reduced hospitalizations, and mortality. The utility of PET for assessing viability will vary for each of these endpoints. Most studies on changes in LV function as related to myocardial viability imaging have been performed in patients with moderately impaired systolic performance without quantifying the size of the viable myocardium or scar. In these studies the positive predictive accuracy decreases significantly in patients with more severe LV dysfunction (LVEF <30-35%) [110]. In patients with severe LV dysfunction, quantification of the amount of viable myocardium as more than 31% of the left ventricle accurately predicts improvement in LVEF after revascularization [111, 112].
