Perception processes

The local dynamics of tire systems considered tluis far has been eitlier steady or oscillatory. However, we may consider reaction-diffusion media where tire local reaction rates give rise to chaotic temporal behaviour of tire sort discussed earlier. Diffusional coupling of such local chaotic elements can lead to new types of spatio-temporal periodic and chaotic states. It is possible to find phase-synchronized states in such systems where tire amplitude varies chaotically from site to site in tire medium whilst a suitably defined phase is synclironized tliroughout tire medium 51. Such phase synclironization may play a role in layered neural networks and perceptive processes in mammals. Somewhat suriDrisingly, even when tire local dynamics is chaotic, tire system may support spiral waves... 

The type and sophistication of materials characterization instrumentation made available for a given IC facility will depend on several factorsi oost/benefit, quality perceptions, process complexity, maturity of the process. Commercial support labs are becoming more readily available to meet the VLSI challenge. The mix of in-house versus external laboratory support then becomes a matter of choice based on considerations of sample turn-around time, maintaining security of proprietary devices or processes, and outside versus inside expenditures.

Perception processes as well as feature extraction or suppression of images or objects can be ascribed to specific neural mechanisms due to some sensory input, or even due to some Visbful thinking" of the PRD. If it is true that the association cortex is affecting the sensitivity of the sensory cortex, then an ALOPEX mechanism is what one needs to close the loop for memory and learning. 

An important feature of ADS-IDAC is that all information must first he perceived by the operator prior to being used to formulate a diagnosis or activate a knowledge-based action. Because the perception process can filter and distort plant information, the operator s plant assessment will not necessarily match the actual plant state. Consequently, the operator may skip procediue steps that are relevant to the actual plant state or execute inappropriate knowledge-based actions. By examining the situations that cause the operator s perceived plant assessment to diverge from reality, situational contexts that might lead to human error events can be identified. 

In February 2009, after the complaints of three families, the French Court of Appeal condemned - without any scientific evidence - a mobile operator to dismantle a mobile phone antenna near Lyon (Vincent 2009). This event reveals that lay risk perception is more than ever taken into account in the risk management process. It is thus fundamental for the manager, who is eager to optimize his/her work, to secure a good understanding of the risk perception process. 

Such an extension of the psychometric paradigm reveals that the study of risk apprehension is more and more centred on the perceiving subject than on the characteristics of the physical danger. This new look at risk perception tends to make it less dependent on the possible bias in the answers induced by the comparison of very different activities and technologies, inherited fi om the early catalogues of risks, whose objective aimed more at risk acceptance than at studying risk perception processes (Starr 1969). 

Despite these possible contexts, information retrieved from the questionnaires is treated as if all answers were given by the interviewees independently of a decision process with regard to the activity or technology at hand. This assumption can of course not be verified, and correlations between answers might reveal more a global decision with respect to an activity than actual correlations between risk characteristics in the perception process.

Once the perception process has been completed individuals will make decisions about how they may respond to the information received. Depending upon the perception of risk, occupants of buildings will often embark on activities which do not involve movement... 

The purpose of our study is to discriminate the areas for the pattern perception process from that for motion itself.

All the themes which have been mentioned in the previous chapters are more or less accounted for in the safety elements of the SDQ perceptional processes, work execution, risk-taking behavior, contextual conditions. Diagnostic judgments are given on 5-point and yes/no rating scales. In its present (2nd) version, the SDQ contains 8 chapters with a total of 165 safety elements (Tab. 7.1).
