Perception, alterations

The so-called indicator electrodes must be considered as microelectrodes, which means that the active surface area is very small compared with the volume of the analyte solution as a consequence, the electrode processes cannot perceptibly alter the analyte concentration during analysis in either non-faradaic potentiometry or faradaic voltammetry. [Pg.22]

Now, if we assume throughout the entire concentration step a current yield of 100% and no perceptible alteration of the bulk concentration, in view of its function as an indicator in the stripping step the electrode area cannot be taken as large, Faraday s law can be applied to calculate the final amalgam concentration according to... [Pg.195]

CNS effects include decreased pain perception, altered reaction to pain, euphoria and hypnosis, nausea and vomiting, respiratory depression and suppression of cough reflexes. Increased tone of the gastrointestinal tract is primarily mediated by fx receptors in the bowel. [Pg.436]

At the particle surface the concentration of the Ag+ions has not perceptibly altered, as the excess of Ag carrying the positive particle charge is only a very small excess in comparison to the amount of Ag+normally present at the crystal face. These excess ions are, moreover, in principle indistinguishable from the original Ag ions of the crystal surface, and bound there in exactly the same way. The thermodjmamic potential of the Ag" ions at the particle surface may therefore be considered, as a first approximation, to be a constant independently of the double layer potential. [Pg.47]

The critical pressures of chlorobenzene and bromobenzene are equal, or nearly so, and it has been found that, when the two liquids are mixed in equimolecular proportions, there is no perceptible alteration of temperature or of volume, and it may therefore be concluded that The conditions specified by Van der Waals are therefore fulfilled, and in this case, at any rate, the... [Pg.38]

A FIGURE 13.2 IheX symmetry operation on an infinite two-dimensional square lattice. This operation advances the lattice (a) along the x axis by one unit (b). The columns shown have been labeled b-g in the figure to show the motion of the lattice, but an ideal lattice would not be perceptibly altered by the operation. [Pg.528]

Masking. Masking can be defined as the reduction of olfactory perception of a defined odor stimulus by means of presentation of another odorous substance without the physical removal or chemical alteration of the defined stimulus from the environment. Masking is therefore hyperadditive it raises the total odor level, possibly creating an overpowering sensation, and maybe defined as a reodorant, rather than a deodorant. Its end result can be explained by the simple equation of 1 + 1 = >2 (Fig. 2a). [Pg.293]

Air-poUutant effects on neural and sensory functions in humans vary widely. Odorous pollutants cause only minor annoyance yet, if persistent, they can lead to irritation, emotional upset, anorexia, and mental depression. Carbon monoxide can cause death secondary to the depression of the respiratory centers of the central nervous system. Short of death, repeated and prolonged exposure to carbon monoxide can alter sensory protection, temporal perception, and higher mental functions. Lipid-soluble aerosols can enter the body and be absorbed in the lipids of the central nervous system. Once there, their effects may persist long after the initial contact has been removed. Examples of agents of long-term chronic effects are organic phosphate pesticides and aerosols carrying the metals lead, mercury, and cadmium. [Pg.2179]

Methylfurfural discolors rapidly on standing, and after some time becomes quite black. The usual anti-oxidants do not retard this alteration perceptibly. [Pg.63]

At C, change procedures to reflect actual performance, provide checklists, alter worker s perception of the importance and consequences of leaving valves open, and improve the supervision of procedures. Some form of lock system would be of benefit... [Pg.313]

The lethal dose of mescaline varies because of the development of tolerance to the action of the drug. After a massive overdose, hypotension, bradycardia, CNS depression, and respiratory failure may be life threatening. Fatal intoxications from mescaline are rare, and fatalities associated with mescaline use are usually attributed to traumas resulting from altered perceptions. [Pg.226]

Copolymerization of butadiene with another monomer such as acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, styrene, or methyl vinyl ketone increases perceptibly the proportion of 1,4 units at the expense of 1,2. The ratio of cis to trans is not materially altered, however. One is obliged to conclude that the co-monomer shows a greater preference for addition to the terminal carbon (i.e., to carbon 4) of the resonating chain radical than does the butadiene Foster and... [Pg.240]

Select azole antifungals (e.g., itraconazole, voriconazole, and posaconazole) and the echinocandins are available for IA treatment. For initial therapy of IA, voriconazole had higher response and survival rates than c-AMB.102 An advantage of voriconazole is its 96% oral bioavailability, making use of this oral drug an attractive and less expensive alternative. The dose of voriconazole was 6 mg/kg IV every 12 hours for two doses, followed by 4 mg/kg IV every 12 hours for at least 7 days, at which time oral voriconazole 200 mg every 12 hours could be administered. Common toxicities reported with voriconazole include infusion-related, transient visual disturbances (i.e., blurred vision, altered color perception, photophobia, and visual hallucinations), skin reactions (i.e., rash, pruritus, and photosensitivity), elevations in hepatic transaminases and alkaline phosphatase, nausea, and headache.102 In addition, voriconazole increases the serum concentrations of medications cleared by cytochrome P-450 2C9, 2C19, and 3A4 (e.g., cyclophosphamide and calcineurin inhibitors) concomitant voriconazole-sirolimus should be avoided.103... [Pg.1462]
