Peptic ulcer disease drugs used

Price AH, Brogden RN. Nizatidine. A preliminary review of its pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties, and its therapeutic use in peptic ulcer disease. Drugs 1988 36 521-539. [Pg.1556]

These drugp are contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to die drugs, asthma, peptic ulcer disease, coronary artery disease, and hyperthyroidism. Bethanecol is contraindicated in those with mechanical obstruction of die gastrointestinal or genitourinary tracts. Fhtients with secondary glaucoma, iritis, corneal abrasion, or any acute inflammatory disease of the eye should not use die ophtiialmic cholinergic preparations. [Pg.222]

Chap. 31), and during lactation. Levodopa is used cautiously in patients with cardiovascular disease, bronchial asthma, emphysema, peptic ulcer disease, renal or hepatic disease and psychosis. Levodopa and combination antiparkinsonism drugs (eg, carbidopa/levodopa) are classified as Pregnancy Category C and are used with caution during pregnancy and lactation. [Pg.267]

O Patients with peptic ulcer disease should avoid exposure to factors known to worsen the disease, exacerbate symptoms, or lead to ulcer recurrence [e.g., non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use or cigarette smoking]. [Pg.269]

The answer is d. (Hardman, pp 909-910.) It is now recognized that infection with fi pylon is a major etiologic factor in peptic ulcer disease. Bismuth salts are bactericidal for many organisms but especially for spirochetes. Colloidal bismuth salts such as bismuth subsalicylate also have a coating or cytoprotective action. Antimicrobials and GI antisecretory drugs are also used in combination with bismuth compounds. [Pg.233]

III. Eradication of Helicobacter pylori C. This microorganism plays an important role in the pathogenesis of chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. The combination of antibacterial drugs and omeprazole has proven effective. In case of intolerance to amoxicillin (p. 270) or clarithromycin (p. 276), metronidazole (p. 274) can be used as a substitute. Colloidal bismuth compounds are also effective however, the problem of heavy-metal exposure compromises their long-term use. [Pg.168]

Antihistamines that produce sedation should not be used with alcohol or any other sedating drug, such as opioid analgesics. Antihistamines with strong anticholinergic effects should be avoided in patients with peptic ulcer disease, prostatic hypertrophy, or bladder or pyloro-duodenal obstruction and in patients who have the potential for acute angle-closure glaucoma. [Pg.254]

Graham DY Therdationdiip between nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use and peptic ulcer disease. Gastroenterol. Clin. North Amer. 171,1990... [Pg.493]

Observational cohort or case control designs have been used to determine ADR relationships with specific therapeutic classes. " Medical claims data are often used in these studies and caution should be warranted due to lack of definite confirmation of drug exposure and the potential for confounding variables. However, these studies have been beneficial in determining risk of ADRs with specific classes (e.g., NSAIDs and the risk of peptic ulcer disease). [Pg.53]

Also used for treatment of peptic ulcer disease in combination with other agents. Erythromycin is considered the drug of choice for whooping cough. [Pg.114]

Drugs have also been associated with osteomalacia. Anticonvulsants increase the hepatic cataboHsm of vitamin D metabolites, and produce end-organ resistance. Phosphatebinding antacids used for treatment of peptic ulcer disease cause osteomalacia by preventing the intestinal absorption of phosphate. Etidronate treatment (e.g., of Paget s disease, osteoporosis, or hypercalcemia of mafignancy) can cause a mineralization defect and result in osteomalacia. [Pg.1933]
