The number of references that are cited is necessarily restrictive and, althongh nnmerons, they represent merely an eclectic selection from a vast literatnre. Relevant references have no doubt been omitted, but the writers can assure the authors of these that there is no malice in the selection. They invariably refer to the primary literature that has been snbjected to the scrutiny of peer review. It is therefore assured that even when the interpretations of the authors should prove faulty—and this is inevitable—a solid and reprodncible basis of fact is available to the critical reader. Some older work has been cited when this has led to lasting concepts, though other early work may be difficult to evaluate by the standards of today and no doubt work at the cutting edge of cnrrent research will rightly require modification and extension in the future. 

As an additional example, reference is drawn to oxide systems in which one of the peer examples is shown in Figure 4.4 (A) which depicts the predominance diagram for oxides of iron in contact with C0/C02 mixture. It can be well used to obtain the answer of (i) consequence of contacting Fe203 with a gas mixture such that the composition and temperature correspond to the point of X (ii) the minimum temperature required at which reduction of Fe304 with C0/C02 mixtures causes wustite (FeO) to form and (iii) the reaction product expected to form first as a result of oxidation of iron with C02 at 1200 K. The Figure 4.4 (A) is very often studied with a line superimposed to indicate the equilibrium in reaction... 

Perhaps I ve found some kind of answer, some way of telling the truth in the blanks between the facts where, till now, there s been nothing. A way that is neither truth nor falsehood but is whole. Currently, there are many databases where the physicochemical, toxicological parameters required to perform a risk assessment can be obtained. It must be borne in mind that the existence of a quality control parameters included in the databases is of great importance. This quality control can be accomplished through periodic updating of the database, the inclusion of bibliographical references of the origin of each parameter, peer reviewed bibliography, etc. 

Reference toxicological values for HRA for the selected pollutants were obtained from ISS/ISPESL [21] and IRIS [22] databases or derived from animal in vivo studies (rat or mouse) and using appropriate safety factors while PNEC concentrations were obtained from previously selected peer-reviewed freely available databases [23] such as ECOTOX [24], ChemIDPlus advanced [25] and specific reviews.

The choice of the reference reservoir for calculating 5 or e values is quite variable among different laboratories. The peer-reviewed literature is full of reports on natural products possessing insecticidal activity and references therein] therefore, the focus of this section will be on both recent and well investigated natural products. Of those well investigated natural products, at least three natural product derived products (neem, spinosyn, and pyrethrum) seem to be used more than all the others.

Martindale, The Extra Pharmacopoeia (often simply referred to as Martindale ) represents an additional publication of relevance to the pharmaceutical industry. Unlike the pharmacopoeias discussed above, Martindale is not a book of standards. The aim of this encyclopaedic publication is to provide concise, unbiased information (largely summarized from the peer-reviewed literature) regarding drugs of clinical interest. 

The literature is assessed through the end of 1998 and, in some cases, into 1999. We have cited only papers in the peer-reviewed literature or, in a few instances, government agency reports that are readily available. Our approach has been to consider primarily typical examples of major papers in the refereed literature in the relevant areas. Because of the enormous breadth of the field today, we have not been able to reference all papers in all relevant areas, which will unavoidably lead to some omissions. We apologize in... 

Trueness or exactness of an analytical method can be documented in a control chart. Either the difference between the mean and true value of an analyzed (C)RM together with confidence limits or the percentage recovery of the known, added amount can be plotted [56,62]. Here, again, special caution should be taken concerning the used reference. Control charts may be useful to achieve trueness only if a CRM, which is in principle traceable to SI units, is used. All other types of references only allow traceability to a consensus value, which however is assumed not to be necessarely equal to the true value [89]. The expected trueness or recovery percent values depend on the analyte concentration. Therefore, trueness should be estimated for at least three different concentrations. If recovery is measured, values should be compared to acceptable recovery rates as outlined by the AOAC Peer Verified Methods Program (Table 7) [56, 62]. Besides bias and percent recovery, another measure for the trueness is the z score (Table 5). It is important to note that a considerable component of the overall MU will be attributed to MU on the bias of a system, including uncertainties on reference materials (Figures 5 and 8) [2]. 

To oversee this surveillance, the European Union has developed a system based on four fundamental cornerstones and controlled by four Community Reference Laboratories (Decision 91/664/EEC) hierarchically linked to a series of 36 authorized National Laboratories (Decision 93/257/EEC). The four cornerstones are a program of reference materials (53), a set of regularly updated mandatory minimum quality criteria for analytical techniques (54-57), a series of Reference Manuals (58, 59), and a continuous series of laboratory workshops plus a future Peer Review Group (60).

The bulk of the references are original papers and review articles in peer-reviewed journals. I cite reviews and books when introducing a subject, and articles when discussing specific examples. Chapter 1 also contains a Further Reading list of recommended books on related specialized subjects. 

We have not implemented this solution, as traceroute is filtered on most internal routers. If the reference point is external, then it may be an interesting alternative solution for identifying machines that are not within our realm. We believe that this solution would provide an interesting solution for tracing intruders at least to the peering point where they enter our networks, thus allowing us to push back countermeasures as far away from our systems as possible.
