Peck 1 well

Initially, major attention was focused on emissions of diesel soot from light- and heavy-duty motor vehicles, because the particle extracts contained such direct-acting bacterial mutagens and animal and possible human carcinogens (IARC Group 2B, 1989) as 1-nitropyrene (1-N02-PY) and the 1,6- and 1,8-dinitropyrenes (DNP), as well as a third isomer, 1,3-dinitropyrene, IARC Group III. For example, Paputa-Peck and coworkers (Paputa-Peck et al., 1983 IARC, 1989) reported 100 nitro-PAHs (17 positively identified) in... [Pg.519]

The way the V(z) curves change over enamel containing a white spot lesion is illustrated in Fig. 9.13 (Peck et al. 1989). At each of the points labelled by letters along the line across the centre of the picture in Fig. 9.13(i), measurements of V(z) were made. Four of these are presented in Fig. 9.13(ii) the letters correspond to the points in Fig. 9.13(i). Curve (a) comes from the intact surface zone. There are three well pronounced maxima apart from the focal maximum, with a fourth trying to appear. The period of the oscillations is about 13 pm. Curve (f) comes from the core of the lesion. The attenuation is much more severe here, and so the heights of the maxima fall off much more rapidly away from focus. The period is also smaller it is reduced to about... [Pg.187]

A. Denning helped select the glass samples at NTS, D. Bridges supplied the Well-5B water at NTS. E. Peck performed the spectrochemical analysis on the Well-5B water. [Pg.112]

Besides the development work earned out in Tubingen, Joachim Buddruss in Dortmund, Germany, as well as Harry Dorn in Blacksburg, USA and Charles Wilkins in Riverside, USA, have to be named as the first pioneers of on-line LC-NMR. Major applications employing LC-NMR have been performed by Tony Keller, Manfred Spraul, Ian Wilson, John Lindon, Jeremy Nicholson and Alfred Preiss. The nanoliter approach has been pioneered by Jonathan Swee-dler, Andrew Webb and Timothy Peck. [Pg.281]

The statement that the proof of effectiveness would be derived from "well-controlled investigations" has been the cornerstone of the FDA s position for the requirement of two positive adequate and well-controlled clinical trialS/ both of which must demonstrate effectiveness at the P < 0.05 level (16). However/ in practice/ most clinical development plans include more than just two studies to document efficacy and evaluate safety. In a pilot study reported by Peck (1) of a cohort of 12 of the 51 NDAs that were approved by the FDA in 1994-1995/ the total number of clinical trials in each submission ranged from 23 to 150. In those trials that were designed to establish efficacy and evaluate safety/ the number of study participants ranged from 1/000 to 13/000. Peck has pointed out that these NDAs probably reflect clinical plans that were designed in the mid-1980s. [Pg.504]

Besides preferential flow through macropores, preferential flow may as well occur through certain parts of the soil matrix. Fingered flow e.g. will be caused by wetting front instability (de Rooij, G.H. (2000)) by air entrapment in the matrix (Peck, A.J. (1964)), by water repellency of the solid phase (Ritsema, C.J. and Dekker, L.W. (1994)), or by the increase of the soil hydraulic conductivity with depth (Raats, P.A.C. (1973)). An exemple of fingered flow as observed during infiltration in a sandy soil is given in the Fig. 8. [Pg.77]

Then it was the turn of the explosives crew. Oppenheimer watched over them, conspicuous in his pork-pie hat, wasted to 116 pounds by a recent bout of chicken pox and the stress of months of late nights and seven-day weeks. In the motion picture that documents this historic assembly he darts in and out of the frame like a foraging water bird, pecking at the open well of the bomb. Someone hands Bradbury a strip of Scotch tape and his arms disappear into the well to secure a block of explosive. He finished the work in late evening under lights. The detonators were not yet installed. That would be the next day s challenge after the unit had been hauled to the top of the tower. [Pg.661]

On the basis of the IR data, the general consensus is that when minerals exhibit 100% flotability, several types of chemisorbed oleate as well as precipitated calcium oleate are present at the surface, in agreement with the initial hypothesis of Peck [425]. However, there is controversy concerning the assignment of the adsorption bands of adsorbed oleate and, hence, the structure of surface species. It stems from the strong dependence of the oleate-calcium coordination on the deposition and precipitation conditions-an effect well known for L monolayers and LB films of alkanoates [426]. The amount of oleate adsorbed on a fluorite slab, as measured by IR spectroscopy, is quite different than that for fine fluorite particles [412]. For the slab, there exists an adsorption saturation point, but for fine particles, the amount of adsorbed oleate increases with concentration, although the concentration dependence of the amount of oleate in the... [Pg.551]

There are three hollow part processes for thermoplastics and they do have a pecking order of sorts. When proceeding with the development of thermoplastic hollow shapes which do not lend themselves well to assembly, the following sequence should be used, starting with the lowest volume requirements ... [Pg.640]

Profiles. Extrusion and pultrusion are the only profile processes, although injection molding can compete with extrusion for short pieces such as rulers. Tooling, although made of hardened steel, tends to be relatively inexpensive. Neither extrusion nor pultrusion lends itself well to short runs due to the lengthy setup required. Therefore, there is no pecking order by volume. Instead, the profile processes are discussed according to their applications. [Pg.641]
