Size of solid particles - Lxiw solids concentrations (less than 10% average) classified by size and material, generally exhibit no adverse affect to pump efficiency. However, the discharge configuration of the pump must be sufficiently large to prevent obstructions. For example, sanitary and wastewater pumps that handle high solids. [Pg.48]

The solubility of any solid substance in a liquid phase is well known to be dependent on the size of its particles (crystals) which are in contact with the saturated solution. For substances existing in solutions in the molecular form, the dependence of their solubility against the particle size is expressed by the Ostwald-Freundlich equation (3.6.57). From this equation it follows, in particular, that an increase in the crystal (particle) dimensions results in a decrease in solubility. The oxide particles precipitated from concentrated solutions should be larger than those formed from more dilute solutions. The increase in the particle sizes in concentrated solutions of cations and oxide ions may be explained by ageing oxide, i.e. by the re-crystallization processes, whose rate increases with the concentration of the dissolved substance. [Pg.286]

Impact polystyrene is produced commercially in three steps solid polybutadiene rubber is cut up and dispersed as small particles in styrene monomer mass prepolymerization and completion of the polymerization either in mass or aqueous suspension. During the prepolymerization step, styrene starts to polymerize by itself by forming droplets of polystyrene upon phase separation. When equal phase volumes are attained, phase inversion occurs (15). The droplets of polystyrene become the continuous phase in which the rubber particles are dispersed. Impact strength increases with rubber particle size and concentration, whereas gloss and rigidity decrease. [Pg.223]

This chapter is written with three objectives in mind. First, the importance of the size and concentration of the particles to be treated in determining the eflFectiveness of some solid-liquid separation processes is evaluated. Second, past theories are used to examine how particle sizes and concentrations are altered by these treatments. Third, interrelationships among the individual unit processes that comprise a complete treatment system are investigated to provide a base for an integral treatment plant design. These aims are undertaken using a typical water treatment system as employed in practice to remove turbidity from surface water supplies. Before addressing these objectives, it is useful to review some mathematical expressions of particle size distributions, and to identify some important properties of these functions. [Pg.354]

Poljmierisation to high solids content has been described in the patent literature (12). However for emulsion polymers a serious problem is one of mechanical stability during polymerisation. Palmgren (22) has studied the mechanical stability of monodisperse PVC latices as a function of particle size, emulsifier concentration, electrolyte concentration and residual monomer content. The mechanical stability of PVC latices of different particle size containing different surface concentrations of SDS emulsifier is shown in Fig 4. At a given emulsifier coverage on the latex, these data indicate that the latex stability decreases with increasing particle size. Latex... [Pg.249]

In the present study, experiments were conducted to determine the individual effects of solid properties (particle size, solids specific gravity) and solids concentration by weight, as well as tip clearance effects on an open impeller centrifugal pump characteristics. Tip clearance is varied from 1.25 mm to 8 mm over the experiments and maximum particle size was approximately 2.4 mm. Test results have shown that, slurry characteristics and running tip clearance have a considerable impact on the pump performance. These effects, therefore, must be taken into account for piunp design considerations and selection. [Pg.499]

Rate of polymerization. The rate of polymerization for homogeneous systems closely resembles anionic polymerization. For heterogeneous systems the concentration of alkylated transition metal sites on the surface appears in the rate law. The latter depends on the particle size of the solid catalyst and may be complicated by sites of various degrees of activity. There is sometimes an inverse relationship between the degree of stereoregularity produced by a catalyst and the rate at which polymerization occurs. [Pg.490]
