Partial selectivity

More difficult situations occur when only some components exhibit selectivity. A common example is a completely embedded peak in HPLC-DAD. In the case of LC-MS or LC-NMR, this problem is often solved by finding pure variables, but because UV/vis spectra are often completely overlapping it is not always possible to treat data in this manner. [Pg.392]

Fortunately, PCA comes to the rescue. In Chapter 5 we discussed the different applicabilities of PCR and MLR. Even using uncertainty factors, the problem of determining the reliability of qualitative methods has not be solved because the usual statistical approaches are often not applicable. Most ultramicrobiosensors use differential measurement to overcome the problems of interferences and electrode fouling. The practical use of these biosensors for direct measurement is limited by interferents, such as ascorbic acid, acetaminophen (paracetamol), uric acid, etc., which are present in complex matricies such as serum. The specificity of the biochemical system is compromised by the partial selectivity of the electrode.
