Demand for natural fiber composites has been evident in Europe where environmental issues are prominent. As an example, all BMWs and Mercedes use natural fiber composites for components, such as door liners, boot liners and parcel shelves. 

Vibration welding is nsed extensively by the automotive industry in the manufacture of components snch as car bumpers, air intake manifolds, fuel pumps, instrument panels, parcel shelves, inner door panels and for the hermetic sealing of air ducting to the internal surface of the dashboard. Other applications include spectacle frames, typewriter covers, filter housings, motor saw housings and heating valves. 

Flax is the most used natural fiber (excluding wood) in the European automotive industry, most of which is obtained as a by-product of the textile industry [5]. However, other natural fibers such as jute, kenaf sisal, coir, hemp, and abaca are also used. Natural fibers are typically combined with polypropylene, polyester, or polyurethane to produce such components as door and trunk liners, parcel shelves, seat backs, interior sunroof shields, and headrests [6]. 

This versatdity offers opportunities in automotive interior appbcations (door padding and panels, knee bolsters, bead restraint systems, sun visors, instrument panels, rear parcel shelves), exterior applications (bumpers, body support), and cavity filling (car trunks, floor systems). 

In 40°C ambient temperature and direct sunlight, these local high temperatures under the front and rear screens really do occur, with modern low-angle aerodynamic screens. Deformation problems are therefore more urgent with fascias and parcel shelves.)... 

OEMs are also using flax/PP in wheel arch liners, as well as in spare wheel covers, seat backs, and parcel shelves. 

EcoTechnilin produces up to an annual 7000 tonnes of nonwoven mats, mainly destined to become parcel shelves, dashboards, or interior trim panels for the global automotive industry. 

In the interior of the vehicle, prefabricated roofs consist of outer decorative layers that are bonded to the layers imparting mechanical rigidity (emulsions, contact adhesives, polyurethane hot-melt adhesives). Contact adhesives, polyurethane adhesives, and high-frequency welding auxiliaries (resin solutions or PVC-based emulsions) are used for attaching textiles or plastic films to the supports made of molded fiberboard or plastics for door inner panels. Emulsions, contact or polyurethane hot-melt adhesives are used for bonding textiles to molded fiberboard or plastics for parcel shelves. 

This area is a great consumer of PP textiles, which have been used not only in floors and seats, but also in parcel shelves, boot linens, interior door panels, and headliners [131, 133, 769, 773, 805, 806]. 

PP fibers of 6.7-11 dtex, with high UV stability are used for parcel shelves. For headliners, fibers with 3.3 dtex are used.

Phenolic resins are used in adhesives for marine and exterior grade plywoods where they are preferred over urea based materials because of their superior water resistance. They are used for binding paper-pulp for the production of automotive glove boxes and parcel shelves, television backs, and suitcases also for a range of adhesive applications.
