Terephthalic Acid from Toluene. Both carbon monoxide and methanol can react with toluene to yield intermediates that can be oxidized to terephthalic acid. In work conducted mainly by Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company (62,63), toluene reacts with carbon monoxide and molar excesses of HF and BF3 to yield a jtanz-tolualdehyde—HF—BF3 complex. Decomposition of this complex under carefully controlled conditions recovers HF and BF3 for recycle and ra-tolualdehyde, which can be oxidized in place of para-xyiene to yield terephthalic acid. One drawback of the process is the energy-intensive, and therefore high cost, decomplexing step. The need for corrosion-resistant materials for construction and the need for extra design features to handle the relatively hazardous HF and BF3 also add to the cost. This process can be advantageous where toluene is available and xylenes are in short supply. [Pg.190]

An important component of cuticle is 18 - methyl - eicosanoic acid [40]. Fatty acid is bound to a protein matrix, forming a layer in the epicuticle [41,42], and this layer is referred to as F - layer [43]. The F - layer can be removed by treatment with alcoholic alkaline chlorine solution in order to enhance wettability. The cuticle and epicuticle control the rate of diffusion of dyes and other molecules onto the fibre [44]. The cortex, however, controls the bulk properties of wool and has a bilateral structure composed of two types of cells referred to as ortho and para [45,46]. The cortical cells of both are enclosed by membranes of at least three distinct layers within which the microfibrils fit. Cells of intermediate appearance and reactivity designated meso - cortical have also been reported [47]. Cortical cells on the ortho side are denti-cuticle and thin, those on the para side are polygonal and thick [47]. If it can be shown that the photooxidation of hydrocarbons in zeolites is a general method, then the shape and size-selective properties of zeolites may potentially be used to control the selectivity of specific oxidation reactions (2,3). For example, ZSM-5 is an important shape-selective catalyst in many reactions, such as the disproportionation of toluene (4). Para-xylene is the dominant product because the transport of the other isomers, ortho- and meta-xylene, is restricted due to the pore size of ZSM-5. Thus, stereochemical aspects of selective photooxidation reactions may also be influenced by the zeolite and may be used to design environmentally benign processes for the synthesis of industrially useful molecules. [Pg.207]

A polymer whisker is a spontaneously formed assembly with a higher-ordered structure and could be used as a single fiber for amplification of the intrinsic properties of the polymer. The whiskers of aromatic polyesters such as poly(para-oxybenzoyl) and poly(2-oxo-6-naphthoyl) have been intensively investigated [31, 32], while there have been only few reports on the whiskers of conjugated polymers such as poly(3-alkylthiophene) [33]. When a helical conjugated polymer with a whisker structure is designed, the intrachain and interchain interactions must be balanced by precisely controlling the van der Waals, rr-electron overlap, and electrostatic interactions. [Pg.322]
