Paper coating colors

Low DS hydroxyethyl starches are used as paper coatings and sizes to improve sheet strength and stiffness. They are also employed as paper-coating color adhesives, and to increase fiber bonding in paper products. Hydroxyethylstarches are also used as textile warp sizes.

In conventional exterior-use paints SB dispersions have largely been replaced by styrene-acrylate dispersions, and their use is now restricted to special applications (corrosion protection primers, wood primers, mortar modification) where low film permeability to gases, water vapor, etc., and complete resistance of the polymer to hydrolysis are necessary. In order to achieve a uniform surface and thus improve printability, paper and card are coated with paper-coating colors. Carboxylated SB dispersions are used in these paints as binders.

P.R.188 is also employed in paper mass coloration, paper surface coloration, paper pulp, and paper spread-coating formulations, as well as in wallpaper and wax crayons.

Paper and Paper Coatings. Ultramarine pigments are used to enhance the hue of white paper or for colored paper. They can be added directly to the paper pulp, or used in applied coatings. When added to the pulp, acid-resistant grades must be used if acid-sizing is employed. They are particularly suitable for colored paper for children s use. 

Poly(vinyl acetate) emulsions and resins have been used as the binder in coatings for paper and paperboard since 1955. The coatings may be clear, colored, or pigmented, and are glossy, odorless, tasteless, grease-proof, nonyellowing, and heat-sealable. Conventional paper-coating equipment is used... 

Additional sources of acid contamination include carboxyl group in the cellulose, acidic carbohydrate gums, bleach and pulping chemical residues, and some constituents of coating colors. Acids may be introduced after the paper is manufactured by atmospheric contamination, particularly sulfur dioxide which is absorbed by the paper and, in the presence of moisture, will generate sulfuric acid.
