Tackifiers are used to promote adhesiveness in film surfaces. They are generally added to products that will be used in stretch/cling applications such as pallet wrap and silage films. One of the most common tackifiers is polyisobutylene (PIB). 

Pallet wrap stretch film is the second largest North American market for LLDPE film. It consnmes over 0.545 billion kilograms of LLDPE annually. Pallet wrap stretch film is used to unitize loads to prevent shifting during shipping. It is also used as a protective film and as a tamper indicator. Film... 

Examples of cast film are high clarity, low density polyethylene (LDPE) film for bread bags, pallet wraps, PVC sheets, and polycarbonate (PC) or acrylic sheets for glazing applications. Casting is the initial step in the production of biaxially oriented PP, PS, and PET films. 

Apart from the reprocessors of post consumer plastics, other companies have continued to specialize in waste plastics from industrial and commercial operations. The recycling of plastic pallet wrap is expanding across the country. Used electrical wire and cable is being reprocessed primarily for the recovery of metals however a number of specialized operations recycle the cable insulators, polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride. Similarly a few facilities exist to recycle waste automotive trim and foam polystyrene packaging. A considerable effort is being expended to find applications for plastic auto shredder residue which is the by product of the automobile recycling industry which currently recovers metals from end of life automobiles. At present viable applications are still understudy and current residues continue to be landfilled. 

Markets for cast film are (a) stretch film that is used in pallet wrapping and other types of shipping to secure the load, (b) high clarity films, and (c) more recently cast film is used in fabricating premium-grade trash bags. 

The optical properties of plastic items (such as haze, transparency or clarity and transmittance) are key issues in packaging applications, especially films, since they allow the consumer to see what is contained within the package. Hence, optical properties are important features in the marketability of a particular product and control of these properties is therefore required whether the film is utilised for food packaging, pallet wrap or other related applications [1,2]. 

For economic reasons, polybutene tackifier is frequently incorporated into linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) during extrusion of pallet wrap and silage wrap films. Taking this additive as an example, there are four points at which a liquid can be added (Figure 12.2) ...
