Area need for drums 542 ft x 36 ft (assuming a 42 in x 42 in pallet stacked 4 high) Area need for cartons 421 ft x 36 ft (height of packed area 13.5 ft)... 

However, both these observations are dependent on other factors e.g. type of pallet, how stacked on pallet, stacking of pallets, etc. 

A fully automatic machine for the rear-end loading of sacks into covered vehicles or into containers has been developed. It consists essentially of a telescopic jib and a palletizing (stacking) head, the whole installation being mounted on a transverse travel unit, so that it can serve several vehicle loading bays located side by side and parallel to one another (Fig. 17).

For example, a pallet stack collapses and a falling pallet just misses an operator standing close by. No injury results and, therefore, no accident is recorded, but there may be damage to products, pallets, the building fabric, plant and fittings. However, the next time such a stack collapses, someone could be seriously injured or killed. This accident is recorded. 

Are empty wooden pallets stacked at 6 heights or less ... 

Keep empty wooden pallet stacks at a 6-foot height because of fire code restrictions. 

Factory Mutual Corner Test. This is a large-scale comer test used to test building products (18—20). The test rig consists of three sides of a cube. The two walls are 15.24 and 11.58 m by 7.62 m tall. The ceiling is 9.14 x 15.24 m. The product to be tested is mounted on the walls and ceilings ia a manner consistent with the iatended use. The fire source is a 340 kg stack of wood pallets located ia the corner. In order to pass the test, no flame can propagate to any extremity of the walls or ceiling. The Factory Mutual flammabiHty apparatus is proposed to replace this test for certain appHcations (21). 

Equipment for Hazardous-Wastes Collection The eqmp-ment used for collection varies with the characteristics of the wastes. For short-haul distances, drum storage and collecdion with an enclosed trailer are often preferred methods. Full-size drums are usually shipped four to a pallet. Smaller sizes are stacked and/or wrapped up to 10 per pallet. As hauling distances increase, larger tank trucks, trailers, and railroad tank cars are used.

Limit stack heights, e.g. 4.5 m for 200 litres drums., 5 m high for drums stored on end or 4 m high on pallets, 4 m high for drums on their sides. 

Identify potential sources of strong blast present within the area covered by the flammable cloud. Potential sources of strong blast include —extended spatial configuration of objects such as process equipment in chemical plants or refineries and stacks of crates or pallets ... 

Two lost time injuries were incurred at the Wyoming Bay facility when a stack of palletized valves in a warehouse were knocked over by a forK-lift truck. 

Packages generally will be small enough to be lifted by hand if required, and of a suitable shape to be stacked on pallets for... 

Pallets are now mostly standardized at 1.2 X 1.0 m and the total weight will be between 4 and 1 t, depending on the product. Handling in small cold stores can be by hand pallet trucks or hand-steered electric drive trucks. These can transport but not lift one pallet onto another. The usual fork-lift truck is a ride-on vehicle, electric driven, and can lift to form a stack of two, three, four or even five pallets high, according to the length of the telescopic lift and the skill of the driver. 

Some sacrifice of perfect accessibility is usually made in the interest of economy. Where storage life is long, pallets may be stacked as many as four rows deep, requiring one gangway for eight rows of pallets. In this case, a gangway of 3.7 m is required to shuffle pallets to get to those at the rear, and the usable floor space comes up to 68%. 

Where the product is in rigid boxes or cartons, it is possible to stack pallets up to three high without auxiliary support, i.e. one on the other. 

Forkdift drivers need to be skilled, experienced, and safetyconscious, since the misplacement of a pallet on a high stack can present a serious hazard. They work in well-insulated protective clothing and in short spells within a shift if the room is much below 0°C. Fork-lift trucks are available with enclosed, heated driver s cabs. Extra staff are required if the traffic is constant. Targe stores will have a wide loading platform outside at floor level to permit fork-lift trucks to manoeuvre their loads onto vehicles. 

These can be stacked on pallets 1200 X 1000 mm, the height per pallet being 1400 mm, say a box height of 1250 mm, allowing for the base of the pallet. Boxes would be loaded flat, three per layer and eight layers high, making 24 boxes per pallet ... 

These pallets can be stacked three high without auxiliary support, and this will be the cheapest and most flexible arrangement, leaving... 

Since it is a one-product store, it seems unlikely that any one pallet must be accessible, so stacking the pallets in rows three deep should be acceptable. 

The solution to this would require constructional details of the proposed racking system and each pallet will now require an area of about 1.400 X 1.075 m. Height clearance must be allowed for each tier - a total of 1.600 m each pallet high. Also, it is not possible for a fork-lift truck to reach three pallets deep into a stack, so the arrangement would now be two deep along the sides and four-deep...
