One of the most serious causes of excess loss is draft. Any air movement in the degreaser vicinity creates vapor turbulence. Look for open windows and doors, ventilation fans and space heaters, air conditioners, even drafts created by paint spray booths or roof exhaust. Overventilation through the slot exhaust of the degreaser is a common problem. 

A paint spraying plant emits VOCs from the vent of its paint spray booths. The stream contains primarily toluene, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), and xylene, with small impurities of silicone and phosphorus. The concentration of VOCs in the dryer effluent varies between a minimum of 0.3 wt% VOC and a maximum of 1.2 wt% VOC with an approximate composition of 50% toluene, 25% MEK, and 25% xylene. 

Design an emission control plant for 50,000 scfm of vent gas at 100°F and 25% relative humidity for 99% removal. The plant is located in Dearborn, Michigan, and the paint spray booths operate on a single 12-hour shift per day. Include the necessary start-up controls. The available fuel is natural gas or oil. Calculate the capital and operating cost and the /lb or ton of VOC removed. Compare the three processes and recommend which is most suitable for this application.

Mineral-insulated, metal-sheathed (MIMS) cable is suitable for use in most environments, but it is not so suitable for use where there may be vibration. In an old paint spray booth which predated the Highly Flammable Liquids and Liquefied Petroleum Gases Regulations, a spider-frame-mounted, electrical extractor fan had been positioned at the mouth of the extract duct and connected by MIMS cable. The fan motor was totally enclosed and explosion-protected as the paints used were flammable. The maintenance was poor and paint accumulations were allowed to build up on the fan blades causing an imbalance and vibration. This led to embrittlement of the copper sheath of the cable, which cracked and broke. Then one of the conductors fractured and sparking occurred between the ends. Ignition of the spray started a fire in the paint accumulations on nearby surfaces and the factory was burnt down. 

Three large KPR systems installed to handle the exhaust air from paint spray booths at an aerospace firm are de.scribed by Kenson and Jackson (1989).
