Paint-like surface

Coatings are applied to the outside or inside of the foundation, creating a radon-resistant barrier between the source and the inside of the home. They come in a wide variety of materials including paint-like products that can be brushed on the interior of the foundation, tar-like materials that are applied to the outside, and cementitious materials that can be brushed or troweled on. They cannot be applied to the underside of the concrete floor slab for obvious reasons, so they must be applied to the inside surface of the slab. The effective life of an interior coating can be greatly diminished by damage therefore, care must be taken to provide protection to the material used. [Pg.1267]

In a second test of spray pattern, special slides were obtained from Erie Scientific, Inc. (Portsmouth, NH) that were evenly coated over their entire surface with a paint-like coating that does not make fluids bead up, nor does it allow bleeding of applied fluids. Wettability is determined by who wins the competition between paint-substrate adhesive forces and cohesive forces in the paint (19). Adhesive forces cause the paint to spread. Cohesive forces cause the drop to bead up. The contact angle is determined by the balance between the two forces. Wetting occurs when the liquid paint likes the substrate, that is, is compatible with it, and beading occurs when the paint does not like the substrate. Surface contamination, sanding, cleaning, and other processes can can change this compatibility, thereby changing the wettability. [Pg.213]
