Paint coating system vehicle

The corrosion protection of the HMMWV was to be provided by the military coating specification Mil-C-46164 and the CARC. The CARC paint system consists of a surface cleaning, epoxy primer, epoxy interior topcoat, and a polyurethane exterior topcoat. The purpose of this coating was to provide chemical resistance (penetration of the coating) and to aid in the decontamination of the vehicle in case of chemical attack. The coating was to provide corrosion protection as well as... [Pg.190]

Application of a top coat is the final step in the finishing process. The topcoat is applied for cosmetic reasons and has little effect on the corrosion performance of the automobile. Advances over the last 40 years have led to better overall paint system performance. The robotic processing and control equipment has led to more uniform paint coverage and superior performance. Simplified vehicle design and optimization of the painting process resulted in increased finish quality, which in turn increases corrosion resistance. [Pg.279]

The use of electrocoat or e-coat paints and primers is another technology that found extensive use in the 1980s. Electrocoated paint is applied on the part to be coated in a paint bath, and electrical current is applied. This method enables painting of the most intricate parts. The electrocoated automobiles were more corrosion resistant. The surface rust was approximately three times higher, and the number of perforations were also higher in vehicles that were treated in the standard conventional manner. Some of these differences may be because of zinc coating on the steel and phosphatizing. However, electroplated paint systems had a noticeable effect on corrosion resistance. [Pg.281]

Polyurethane systems based on hydroxypolyester resins and free polyisocyanate resins (two-pack polyurethane paints. Section 2.9) are used particularly for finishes of road vehicles, railroad vehicles, aircraft, and plastics. Blocked polyisocyanate resins are available for formulating one-pack stoving enamels which are particularly suitable for coil and can coatings [2.83]. [Pg.52]

Coatings on road transport vehicles are expected to have a minimum service life of ten years. Paint systems must therefore be of high quality. [Pg.251]

Vehicle refinish (VR) coatings are used to repair damaged or corroded car paint systems. They must exhibit the same performance characteristics as the original paint system if they are to meet the car manufacturer s bodywork corrosion warranty. However, the most important feature of VR coatings is their colour. There are approximately 150 million cars on the roads of Europe, painted in over 20000 different colours, and every year a further 600 new colours are added. Paints also age and, depending on climatic conditions, a 10-year-old car may have changed colour considerably. A VR bodyshop must be able to match the colour of the car, irrespective of its age, colour and type of finish (which will usually be either a solid colour, metallic, or pearlescent). This is achieved by the skills of the VR bodyshop and the colour-matching system of the paint manufacturer. [Pg.163]
