P-Glucuronidase activity

In an in vivo study, Jenab et al. [150] demonstrated the protective effects of flaxseed lignans against colon cancer. This was associated with an increase in P-glucuronidase activity. The total activity of this enzyme correlated positively with total urinary lignan excretion, especially secoisolariciresinol diglycoside, and negatively with the total number of aberrant crypts and the total number of aberrant crypt foci in the distal colon.

Species differences in susceptibility to testicular damage have been noted. More severe testicular damage was seen in rats and guinea pigs than in mice and hamsters at the same dose level. This is thought to be due, at least in part, to differing levels of P-glucuronidase activity that may result in different levels of the free primary metabolite, mono- -butyl phthalate, in the testes (see Section 3. 5 Mechanisms of Action).

In rats infected with aerosols of Staphylococcus aureus and then exposed for 5 h to 2.5 ppm of ozone, bacterial ingestion and clearance by alveolar macrophages were impaired due to the absence of lysosomal acid phosphatase and P-glucuronidase activities in those cells subjected to the dual insults (Goldstein et al. 1978).
