Oxygen consumption index

It has also been suggested that terlipressin has vasoconstrictor activity within the splanchnic vascular territory (21). Hypotension developed under general anesthesia in 32 patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy treated with renin-angiotensin inhibitors (22). They were randomized to received terlipressin 1 mg (n = 16) or noradrenaline infusion. Compared with baseline those who received terlipressin had reduced gastric mucosal perfusion for at least 4 hours. There was also reduced oxygen delivery and oxygen consumption index at 30 minutes and 4 hours in those who received terlipressin. 

Oxygen consumption provides an index of function that incorporates several parameters, including irmer membrane impermeability and OXPHOS integrity. 

The correlation between the TEARS assay and MDA dnring oxidation of edible oils may be complicated by the presence of tocopherols (e.g. Vitamin E, 21) . An evaluation was carried of MDA, determined by an independent method , and TEARS as indices for direct oxygen uptake of edible oils and unsatnrated fatty acids. The linear increase of MDA and TEARS with oxygen consumption of soybean oil, in a closed vessel at 170 °C, stops when the latter value reaches 500 p.molL, when both MDA and TEARS start to decrease on further O2 consumption. The same process carried out at 40 °C, using 2,2 -azobis(2,4-dimethylvaleronitrile) (171) as initiator, shows linearity up to 1500 p,molL O2 consumption . A similar behavior is observed for nnsatnrated fatty acids snch as oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids . On the other hand, depletion of Vitamin E (a-tocopherol, 21) and its analogs y- and 5-tocopherol (172, 173) present in the oil show a linear dependence on O2 consumption of the oil, np to 1800 p,molL . This points to the consumption of these antioxidants, and especially 21, as a good index for the O2 uptake in oils at high temperature. The determination of the tocopherols is carried ont by HPLC-FLD (Xex = 295 nm, Ah = 325 nm) . ... 

Myocardial oxygen consumption (MVO2) is calculated as pressure-work-index according to Rooke and Feigl (1982). 

The combustion is a reaction between the combustible and oxygen. Oxygen consumption is one of the indicators of the amount of generated heat The limiting oxygen concentration is a convenient material flammability index. Practice has shown that the standard LOI procedure (ASTM D 2863-76) is the most reproducible test, and most sensitive to any compositional or structural variations in the material.

Nessi et al. (Nl) succeeded in rupturing the PMN membrane by adding heparin to the cell suspension. The oxygen consumption, which was measured by a photometric method, could be stimulated by the addition of ADP. An oxygen curve in stage 3, an acceptor control index, and an oxidative phosphorylation quotient with different substrates were obtained according to the scheme of Chance and Williams (Cl). 

Effects on the myocardium are not significant in normal individuals. In patients with coronary artery disease but no acute medical problems, 8-15 mg morphine administered intravenously produces a decrease in oxygen consumption, left ventricular end-diastolic pressure, and cardiac work effects on cardiac index usually are slight. In patients with acute myocardial infarction, the cardiovascular responses to morphine may be more variable than in normal subjects, and hypotension may be more pronounced.
