The iron-CO system is extremely sensitive to small traces of oxygen and the shift from 5.10 to 4.70 / will occur slowly when the chemisorbed CO is allowed to stand in a hydrogen or nitrogen atmosphere at 35° C. This slow change is attributed to small amounts of oxygen present as an impurity. [Pg.20]

For the explanation of this difference the blocking effect of oxygen (which is contained in a N20-He stream as an impurity) on the active sites for N20 decomposition may be considered. However, it can be estimated to be at most 1.8x10 mol/g-Ag. The number of active sites for N20 decomposition should therefore be smaller than the number of the active sites for oxygen adsorption. Since N20 can not be decomposed on the oxidized surface, it may be concluded that the reduced surface is heterogeneous for the decomposition of N20 a certain part of the active sites on the surface is not available for N20 decomposition.
