In the 1980 s zeolites attracted a renewed attention. They were shown to be rather promising catalysts if, instead of O2, a chemically pre-modified oxygen entering the oxygen-containing molecules is used. The most known example is an excellent catalytic performance of titanium silicalites in the liquid phase oxidations with H2O2 [5]. A gas phase oxidation with nitrous oxide is another approach in this field being intensively developed in the last years [2],... 

The reaction is carried out using a titanium silicalite-1 (TS-1) zeolite catalyst [30, 122]. This type of catalyst is known to accelerate the selective oxidation of alcohols, epoxidation of alkenes and hydroxylation of aromatics. These reactions have importance for fine-chemical production. 

Many of these problems disappeared in 1983 when Taramasso, Perego, and Notari synthesized titanium silicalite-1 (TS-1),1 which greatly affected the use of zeolite catalysts for practical oxidation chemistry. This catalyst shows outstanding activity, selectivity, and stability below 100°C. 

TS-l and titanium silicalite-2 (TS-2) are microporous solid materials made of Si02 and Ti02 that have silicalite structures (TS-1 has the ZSM-5 structure and TS-2, the ZSM-11 structure) modified by isomorphous substitution of Si(IV) with Ti(IV). TS-1 and TS-2, the former being most studied, show similar properties in catalysis of H202 oxidations. 

Recently, based on such an oxidative system, the synthesis of nitrone (12) an inhibitor of 5a-reductase has been carried out (Scheme 2.7) (50). Oxidation of amines with H2O2 can be catalyzed with peroxotungstophosphate (PCWP) (51), Se02 (52-54), and titanium silicalite molecular sieves TS-1 and TS-2 (55, 56). 

The titanium-silicalite composihon, TS-1, has achieved commercializahon in selective oxidation processes and iron-siUcalite in ethylbenzene synthesis. 

Oxidations of various organic substrates with aqueous hydrogen peroxide have been reported on titanium containing derivatives of silicalite-1, denoted as Titanium-Silicalite-1 or TS-1 [93-97]. Examples of reactions which are catalyzed by TS-1 with high H2O2 yields and product selectivities are listed in Table 6. The oxidations are generally carried out at atmospheric pressure and at temperatures ranging from 273 to 373 K. 

Indeed, several interesting procedures based on three families of active catalysts organometallic complexes, phase-transfer compounds and titanium silicalite (TS-1), and peroxides have been settled and used also in industrial processes in the last decades of the 20th century. The most impressive breakthrough in this field was achieved by Katsuki and Sharpless, who obtained the enantioselective oxidation of prochiral allylic alcohols with alkyl hydroperoxides catalyzed by titanium tetra-alkoxides in the presence of chiral nonracemic tartrates. In fact Sharpless was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2001. 

In the field of heterogeneous catalysis using H2O2 as oxygen source, examples of the use of titanium-silicalite (TS-1) or Ti-beta in the oxidation of selected alcohols, with formation of a Ti-peroxo species, have been reported... 

A unique titanium(IV)-silica catalyst prepared by impregnating silica with TiCLt or organotitanium compounds exhibits excellent properties with selectivities comparable to the best homogeneous molybdenum catalysts.285 The new zeolite-like catalyst titanium silicalite (TS-1) featuring isomorphous substitution of Si(IV) with Ti(IV) is a very efficient heterogeneous catalyst for selective oxidations with H2C>2.184,185 It exhibits remarkable activities and selectivities in epoxidation of simple olefins.188,304-306 Propylene, for instance, was epoxidized304 with 97% selectivity at 90% conversion at 40°C. In the present work the synthesis of highly dispersed niobium or titanium containing mesoporous molecular sieves catalyst by direct grafting of different niobium and titanium compounds is reported. Grafting is achieved by anchoring the desired compounds on the surface hydroxyl groups located on the inner and outer surface of siliceous MCM-41 and MCM-48 mesoporous molecular sieves. Catalytic activity was evaluated in the liquid phase epoxidation of a-pinene with hydrogen peroxide as oxidant and the results are compared with widely studied titanium silicalites. The emphasis is directed mainly on catalytic applications of niobium or titanium anchored material to add a more detailed view on their structural physicochemical properties. 

The first discovered member of the group of crystalline microporous materials made of oxides of titanium and silicon is titanium silicalite-1 (TS-1). TS-1 has attracted much interest for its unique catalytic properties it is also of interest by virtue of the proposal that Tiiv assumes tetrahedral coordination in substituting for SiIV in framework positions of crystalline silica, as stated above. To clarify this point, many detailed studies of the TS-1 structure have been carried out. An outcome of the work was the discovery of new crystalline microporous titanium silicates. 

The effect of zeolite porosity on the reaction rate was also well demonstrated in liquid-phase oxidation over titanium-containing molecular sieves. Indeed, the remarkable activity in many oxidations with aqueous H2O2 of titanium silicalite (TS-1) discovered by Enichem is claimed to be due to isolation of Ti(IV) active sites in the hydrophobic micropores of silicalite.[42,47,68 69] The hydrophobicity of this molecular sieve allows for the simultaneous adsorption within the micropores of both the hydrophobic substrate and the hydrophilic oxidant. The positive role of hydrophobicity in these oxidations, first demonstrated with titanium microporous glasses,[70] has been confirmed later with a series of titanium silicalites differing by their titanium content or their synthesis procedure.[71] The hydrophobicity index determined by the competitive adsorption of water and n-octane was shown to decrease linearly with the titanium content of the molecular sieve, hence with the content in polar Si-O-Ti bridges in the framework for Si/Al > 40.[71] This index can be correlated with the activity of the TS-1 samples in phenol hydroxylation with aqueous H2C>2.[71] The specific activity of Ti sites of Ti/Al-MOR[72] and BEA[73] molecular sieves in arene hydroxylation and olefin epoxidation, respectively, was also found to increase significantly with the Si/Al ratio and hence with the hydrophobicity of the framework.
