This cell system is also under active development for EV traction. Realistic targets are reported as 80 Wh/kg for energy density, 200 W/kg for power density, and a cycle life of over 1000. The Ovonic Battery Co have already demonstrated 67 Wh/kg for a 250 Ah battery, and Panasonic have reported a similar value for a 130 Ah unit. Thermal management and cost are likely to be the key factors limiting development of nickel-metal hydride technology for electric vehicles.

As GM and the other automakers fought the ZEV mandate, there was clear evidence that the battery technology was better than they were letting on. An upstart company in Massachusetts, Solectria, had used an old contract that predated the sale to GM to obtain the Ovonics batteries. It used those batteries to build a four-passenger car that resembled the streamlined EV1, and that had been crash-tested with impressive results its light but very strong construction seemed to make it one of the safest cars on the road. 

High-power and energy-dense Ni-MH are being widely used by heavy-duty vehicles, such as buses. These rechargeable batteries have demonstrated remarkable electrical performance and economical advantages. Ovonic Battery Company has been recognized as the leader in the design, development, and commercialization.

Energy Conversion Devices (ECD) of Troy, Michigan has announced a potential breakthrough in solid hydrogen storage. ECD is one of the parent companies of GM Ovonics, patent holder for the nickel metal hydride battery. A hydride, by definition, is a solid material that stores hydrogen.

Show. The van was powered by twin 25-kilowatt fuel cells, assisted by a 20-ampere-hour, 500-watts-per-kilogram, 6.3-kilowatt-hour Ovonic metal hydride battery pack. The fuel cell Zafira was the first product of GM s new Global Alternative Propulsion Center, an international fuel cell development facility with laboratories in Michigan, in New York, and in Germany.
