I once unsuccessfully attempted to convince Professor Gerhardt Schen-kel at Stuttgart University s Institute of Plastic Technology that the then existing models for plastic extruders were only conditionally applicable to extruders for ceramic bodies [6]. Later, we had a cultivated meeting of the minds with his successors at the institute. Prof. H.G. Fritz and K. Geiger [7]. 

This research was carried out during the author s stay at the Institut fiir Anwendungen der Geodasie im Bauwesen in Stuttgart University. The Institut fur Chemische Verfahrenstechnik at Stuttgart University has reported at length on the topic of process design and intensification - in particular as they impact on several examples of chemical reaction engineering (Eigenberger et al., 2007). A number of processes were examined, ranging from steam reformers to diesel exhaust gas treatment (an interesting non-chemical plant application of PI which readers of the paper may find valuable).
