Other Short-Term Indications

Mifepristone together with prostaglandins may also be used for late first- and second-trimester terminations of pregnancy [52]. Since mifepristone softens and dilates the cervix, it can induce labor following intrauterine fetal death [61]. For this indication, it has been used successfully alone or together with misoprostol [62].

A bacterial assay, the Photobacterium test, based on the inhibition of light emission of a bioluminescent bacterium Vibrio fisheri (ISO, 1998), originally developed to test the toxicity of industrial effluents, gives an indication of the effects of the test agent on the oxidative metabolism of the cell. As a bacterial assay its advantages are rapidity and relatively low costs, but naturally the differences between bacterial and mammalian systems make the interpretation of the results even more difficult than with other short-term tests. 

The long-term aim must always be to eliminate the hazard at source, but, whilst attempting to achieve this aim, other short-term actions - for example utilisation of protective equipment-will be necessary. This list indicates an order-of priority for remedial measures for any risk situation. 

This test on rigid plastics indicates their ability to withstand continuous short-term compression without yielding and loosening when fastened as in insulators or other assemblies by bolts, rivets, etc. It does not indicate the creep resistance of a particular plastic for long periods of time. It is also a measure of rigidity at service temperatures and can be used as identification for procurement. Data should indicate stress level and the temperature of the test. 

The ventricular assist device (VAD) is a surgically implanted pump that reduces or replaces the work of the right, left, or both ventricles.
