Other regulated substances. A liquid or solid which is an anesthetic, is noxious, or has other similar properties which could cause extreme annoyance or discomfort to humans. 

CONFINED SPACE A spacc which is substantially, although not always entirely, enclosed and where there is a reasonably foreseeable risk of serious injury from hazardous substances or conditions within the space or nearby. The risks may include flammable substances oxygen deficiency or enrichment toxic gases, fume or vapour ingress or presence of liquids free-flowing solids presence of excessive heat. For the purpose of the Confined Spaces Regulations 1997 a confined space means any place, including any chamber, tank, vat, silo, pit, trench, pipe, sewer, flue, well or other similar space in which, by virtue of its enclosed nature, there arises a reasonably foreseeable specified risk. 

Both RCRA and CERCLA address hazards to the environment. However, CERCLA is the more comprehensive statute. CERCLA hazardous substances encompass RCRA hazardous wastes, as well as other toxic pollutants regulated by the CAA, the CWA, and the TSCA. Thus, all RCRA hazardous wastes may trigger CERCLA response actions when released into the environment. RCRA nonhazar-dous solid wastes, on the other hand, do not trigger CERCLA response actions unless they present an imminent and substantial danger as pollutants or contaminants (Figure 12.10). 

Theories of interacting subunits are often referred to as allosteric theories, but the use of this word is unfortunate and should be avoided. The word allostery (Greek alios, other stereos, solid) refers to the possibility that substances (known as modifiers or effectors) can be attached at sites other than the site for the attachment of substrate. This is a completely different type of phenomenon and is of great importance in connection with the regulation of metabolic processes, but should be sharply distinguished from subunit interactions. However, in some enzymes the two effects are found together. 

The equilibrium in the solid state between such substances as the allotropic forms of tin or sulphur, or between the participants in any other chemical reaction, is governed by principles precisely similar to those which regulate the coexistence of phases such as solid and liquid. 

Articles and substances which during air transport present a danger not covered by other classes. Included in this class are Aviation regulated solids or liquids. Magnetized material and miscellaneous articles and substances. lATA 3.9.1... 

Newly introduced regulations The Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR) deal with those substances -whether solids, dusts, liquids, vapours or gases - that, when present in the atmosphere, can ignite and cause injury or damage by explosion, fire or other event . The Regulations apply to all premises where such circumstances can occur but with certain listed exceptions. 

In this chapter, we explore liquids, solids, and solutions (homogeneous mixtures of liquids with solids or other liquids). We pay special attention to water, the most important liquid on Earth. We will also look at the substances that pollute our water, and how this pollution is regulated and controlled.
