Other Regulated Materials ORM

In general, a material corresponding to the Other Regulated Material (ORM) hazard class is a material that may pose an unreasonable risk to health and safety or property when transported in commerce and that does not meet the definition of any other hazard class. Consumer commodities, as will be seen later, are an exception. [Pg.100]

There are five classes of ORM materials, A through E, as follows  [Pg.100]

Materials classified as ORM-A are commonly regulated for air shipment only, unless they are also hazardous substances or hazardous wastes (see ORM-E). [Pg.100]

Dilute hypochlorite solutions, stannous chloride solid, etc., are ORM-B materials. [Pg.100]

A hazardous waste, as defined by DOT, means any material subject to the hazardous waiste manifest requirements of the EPA specified in 40CFR Part 262 (49CFR 172.8 and Classification Under RCRA later in this chapter). [Pg.101]

Additional Marking Requirements for Certain Hazardous Materials The regulations also require certain additional markings for packages containing radioactive materials, Other Regulated Materials (ORM), and hazardous substances and wastes. [Pg.368]

Also included in the Miscellaneous Hazardous Materials class is Other Regulated Materials ORM-D, Consumer Commodities. They are materials that present a limited hazard during transportation due to the form, quantity, and packaging. Some of these materials, if they were shipped in tank or box truck quantities, would fit into another hazard class. However, because the individual packaging quantities are so small, the DOT considers the hazard is limited and they are labeled ORM-... [Pg.375]

The Transportation Safety Act defines several classes of hazardous materials. Classes include explosives, radioactive material, flammable liquids or solids, combustible liquids or solids, oxidizing or corrosive materials, compressed gases, poisons, etiologic agents (hazardous biological materials), irritating materials, and other regulated materials (ORM). The act excludes firearms and ammunition. Other chapters in this book discuss hazards associated with some of these materials. [Pg.189]

ORM-E A DOT hazard classification applied to a material which is not included in any other hazard class but which is subject to the requirements of the DOT regulations. Materials in this class include "Hazardous Waste" and other hazardous materials. [Pg.96]

ORM-A This is a U.S. designation, where the reader should refer to 49 CFR 173.500. An ORM-A material is a material which has an anesthetic, irritating, noxious, toxic, or other similar property and which can cause extreme annoyance or discomfort to passengers and crew in the event of leakage during transportation. A list of the chemicals specified as ORM-A materials can be found in the regulation. [Pg.249]
