Automobiles are the largest source of obsolete scrap. Other important sources of obsolete scrap include the demolition of steel stmctures and railroad companies. The latter provide a steady flow of scrap from their fabricating shops and from the recovery of worn out or abandoned track and railroad cars. AH iron and steel products are recyclable if economically retrieved when scrapped. 

If the test is to be a guide for the selection of a material for a particular purpose, the limits of controlhng factors in service must be determined. These factors include oxygen concentration, temperature, rate of flow, pH value, and other important characteristics. 

In addition to flow regime, hold-up and pressure drop are two other important parameters in two-phase gas-liquid flows. Hold-up is defined as the relative portion of space occupied by a phase in the pipe. It can be expressed on a time or space average basis, with the actual method chosen depending on the intended use of the hold-up value, and the measurement method employed. There are numerous correlations in the literature for hold-up, but most are based upon a pressure drop-hold-up correlation. The following expression is a widely recognized empirical relationship between hold-up and pressure drop ... 

The direction of flow is important, as it has a pronounced effect on the efficiency of a heat exchanger. The flows may be in the same direction (parallel flow, cocurrent), in the opposite direction (counterflow), or at right angles to each other (cross-flow). The flow may be either single-pass or multipass the latter method reduces the length of the pass. 

The above considerations give us a technique for estimating the required jet momentum and outlet flow rates. Other important parameters are the heights of the inlet and outlet apertures. The choice of these parameters will not, in general, have a significant effect on the overall fluid flow pattern and the resulting distribution of the contaminant, and these should be chosen to optimize the performance of the inlet and exhaust pumps. 

For Clean Rooms (rooms of a very high standard) dust count per unit volume will be specified, but other specifications for room cleanliness are usually in terms of filtration performance against a standard test dust. Other important features are resistance to air flow and dustholding capacity, leading to the fan energy required and filter life. 

The IIEC model was also used to study the importance of various design parameters. Variations in gas flow rates and channeling in the bed are not the important variables in a set of first-order kinetics. The location of the catalytic bed from the exhaust manifold is a very important variable when the bed is moved from the exhaust manifold location to a position below the passenger compartment, the CO emission averaged over the cycle rose from 0.14% to 0.29% while the maximum temperature encountered dropped from 1350 to 808°F. The other important variables discovered are the activation energy of the reactions, the density and heat... 

General Considerations. Some other important considerations that should be made when designing a flow splitting system are listed below.

Figure 4.26 displays examples of Vicat softening temperatures (VST) versus VA content. The other important parameter for VST is the melt flow index. 

Other important parts of the cell are 1) the structure for distributing the reactant gases across the electrode surface and which serves as mechanical support, shown as ribs in Figure 1-4, 2) electrolyte reservoirs for liquid electrolyte cells to replenish electrolyte lost over life, and 3) current collectors (not shown) that provide a path for the current between the electrodes and the separator of flat plate cells. Other arrangements of gas flow and current flow are used in fuel cell stack designs, and are mentioned in Sections 3 through 8 for the various type cells. 

These results are useful reference conditions for real flows past spherical particles. For example, comparisons are made in Chapter 5 between potential flow and results for flow past a sphere at finite Re. Other potential flow solutions exist for closed bodies, but none has the same importance as that outlined here for the motion of solid and fluid particles. 

Other parameters are more difficult to calculate. However, they can be very much more useful because they take into account two other important aspects. Firstly, the pattern of flow of money into and out of the business (cash-flow) since items of income (revenue) and expenditure (outgoings) can vary a lot with time. For instance, as can be seen in Figure 13.5, initially expenditure greatly exceeds income, whereas later on once the plant is operating and product is being sold income exceeds expenditure. Secondly there is the time value of money , that is money received now is more valuable than the same sum of money received in a years time, as it can be invested and interest will have accmed on it by the end of the year. Hence, early income to a business is valuable as it can be invested in the business and so saves having to borrow money to buy equipment, pay wages, etc. Thus the value of money is not completely absolute, but is a function of time. 

Blockade of receptors in other tissues elicits miosis (small pupils) and nasal stuffiness. Alpha receptors are expressed in the base of the bladder and the prostate, and their blockade decreases resistance to the flow of urine. Alpha blockers, therefore, are used therapeutically for the treatment of urinary retention due to prostatic hyperplasia (see below). Individual agents may have other important effects in addition to -receptor antagonism (see below).
