Organophosphorus groundwater

The potential use of substitute crop protectants in areas where contamination has been discovered and the general lack of Information with respect to the leaching properties and groundwater persistence of many carbamate and organophosphorus pesticides make It Imperative to Investigate the degradation behavior of a broad range of these compounds. 

Dr. P. Jeffers at the State University of New York at Cortland is gathering information to determine the persistence of organophosphorus compounds in groundwater and the effects of various soils on the degradation and transport of these compounds. Both neutral and base hydrolysis processes will be evaluated. Transport studies in soil columns will be conducted to determine the mobility of diazinon in soils.

The technique was used to determine several organophosphorus pesticides (E)- and (Z)-Mevinphos, Dichlorvos, Azinphos-methyl, Azinphosethyl, Parathion-methyl, Parathion-ethyl, Malathion, Fenitrothion, Fenthion, Chlorfenvinphos and Diazinon, in groundwater.

Lichrospher Si 100 RP-18 precolumns was used to determine 11 organophosphorus compounds in groundwater with recoveries ranging from 94 tol20% and LOQ ranging from 5 to 37 ng/1.
