Further cycles will cause no difference in the curve in the case of stable films with adequate adhesion and chemical properties. Leach-out, the inverse of the described process, can be studied by cycling the saturated film in a solution which contains no probe molecules. Probe molecules squeeze out water from the pore system during break-in, while the same effect is made by water during leach-out - it spaces out the electrolyte and the probe molecules. The reports were that water condensed from the vapor phase into 10-100-/im quartz or pyrex capillaries had physical properties distinctly different from those of bulk liquid water. Confirmations came from a variety of laboratories around the world (see the August 1971 issue of Journal of Colloid Interface Science), and it was proposed that a new phase of water had been found many called this water polywater rather than the original Deijaguin term, anomalous water. There were confirming theoretical calculations (see Refs. 121, 122) Eventually, however, it was determined that the micro-amoimts of water that could be isolated from small capillaries was always contaminated by salts and other impurities leached from the walls. The nonexistence of anomalous or poly water as a new, pure phase of water was acknowledged in 1974 by Deijaguin and co-workers [123]. A useful property of liquids is their ability to dissolve gases, other liquids and solids. The solutions produced may be end-products, e.g. carbonated drinks, paints, disinfectants or the process itself may serve a useful function, e.g. pickling of metals, removal of pollutant gas from air by absorption (Chapter 17), leaching of a constituent from bulk solid. Clearly a solution s properties can differ significantly from the individual constituents. Solvents are covalent compounds in which molecules are much closer together than in a gas and the intermolecular forces are therefore relatively strong. When the molecules of a covalent solute are physically and chemically similar to those of a liquid solvent the intermolecular forces of each are the same and the solute and solvent will usually mix readily with each other. Glasses for electrical and electronic components are represented by the lead tubing and cathode-ray-tube screen and cone glasses. These glasses do not operate under severe corrosion conditions, but surfaces must not leach excessive alkali under damp conditions or electrical breakdown can occur.
