Organizations and Symposia

A number of international organizations and scientific meetings play a pivotal role in the RM and CRM world. Without their involvement there would be few reference materials and little cooperation. Users of reference materials should ensure that they monitor the activities of these organizations and understand the consequences of any changes in recommended procedures or guidelines. 

The Reference Materials Committee (REMCO) of ISO was established in 1976 and was initially known as REMPA. The aim of this committee is to carry out and encourage a broad international effort for the harmonization and promotion of CRMs and their production and applications. Through the ISO website (Table 8.4), it is easy to access vast amounts of information about the activities of ISO and its various technical committees.

Although a number of organizations and symposia have dealt with packaging, and to some extent with polymers, virtually none have emphasized the synthetic and physical chemistry aspects of these systems. For those reasons, we felt it was especially... 

The first chapter presents the general aspects of the reaction Chapters 2-6 illustrate the various methods and their applications in organic synthesis. At the end of each chapter a list of graphically abstracted Diels-Alder reactions is presented to show selected synthetic applications of the specific methodology. The discussion of the various topics is not exhaustive because our aim has been to emphasize the synthetic potential of each method. Chapter 7 reports a list of books, reviews, monographs and symposia proceedings which have appeared since 1990 and an index of keywords to help the reader find a particular paper of interest. 

Information about forthcoming meetings and symposia can be found on the wuw sites of the organizations described above (see Table 8.4). The journal Accreditation and Quality Assurance published by Springer (see Table 8.2) includes a comprehensive review of RM related meetings.

Among Reichmanis s many honors is the Society of Chemical Industry s 2001 Perkin Medal for her pioneering contributions to designing materials that allow silicon chips to continue shrinking in size while also improving in performance. She has authored more than 120 journal articles, edited five books, and organized and chaired numerous national and international symposia. She holds 17 U.S. patents. Reichmanis earned her B.S. (1972) and Ph.D. (1975) at Syracuse University. She resides in Westfield, NJ. 

Organize workshops and symposia and publish reports on topics important to the continuing health and advancement of chemical science and technology.

Furthermore, in addition to many workshops and symposia around the world the yearly international conference on AOTs for water and air remediation has to be mentioned. It was organized successfully for the first time in 1995 in London (Ontario, Canada). In addition, the proceedings of the first international conference on Ti02 photocatalysis (Ollis and Al-Ekabi, 1993) provide a selection of methods and techniques applied in photocatalyzed water and air purification. The establishment of reference standards is adopted at the suggestion of the related panels after due consideration of the opinion of the NIHS, which is directly responsible for establishing those reference standards in cooperation with the Society of Japanese Pharmacopoeia. The Society of Japanese Pharmacopeia (Shibuya 2-12-19, Shibuya, Tokyo 150-0002, Japan) is a non-profit private organization that carries out activities in support of MHW administration and regulation of pharmaceuticals. The Society plays several roles and, in particular, makes reference standards available including a part of the pharmacopeial reference standards. It also distributes Pharmacopeia and related informative documents, such as the JP Forum, and convenes public meetings and symposia. 

Organize and conduct local, regional, national, and international meetings, workshops, and symposia for SETAC members and others interested in the environmental sciences. 

Probably the single most informative website, with its two main sections The Molecular Diversity Journal on the Internet and Diversity Information Pages . The site is administered by Dr. M. Lebl. It contains a plethora of valuable information, which is well organized in categories such as Articles , Procedures , Links , and Symposia , to name but a few.
