In addition to water, virtually any organic polar modifier may be used to control solute retention in liquid-solid chromatography. Alcohols, alkyl2aiines, acetonitrile, tetrahydrofuran and ethyl acetate in volumes of less than one percent can be incorporated into nonpolar mobile phases to control adsorbent activity. In general, column efficiency declines for alcohol-moderated eluents cogqpared to water-moderated eluent systems. Many of the problems discussed above for water-moderated eluents are true for organic-moderated eluents as well. [Pg.198]

Other Novel Solvents. In addition to molecules based on carboxylic and carbonic esters, other types of organic polar compounds were also explored as possible solvent candidates but with limited success. Zhang and Angell synthesized a dimeric glycol ester of boric ester (BEG, Table 12) in... [Pg.142]

Medium—The rate of a chemical reaction depends on the medium in which the reaction occurs. It may make a difference whether a medium is aqueous or organic polar or nonpolar or liquid, solid, or gaseous. 1 point for each factor (including explanation from points listed). [Pg.224]

To manufacture cationic materials, the resin beads are swollen with an organic polar solvent to prevent cracking during sulfonation, and then sulfonated with hot and concentrated sulfuric acid (see Figure 7.18) [116-118], With this method, a strong-acid cation exchanger can be produced [6],... [Pg.367]

Li reacts readily with 02 to form a Li20 film as the most stable product. However, Li202 and Li02 can also be formed at the outer part of such a film. The saturation concentration of 02 at room temperature in organic polar aprotic solutions is estimated in the order of 10 -10 4 M [218], Nevertheless, FTIR spectroscopic studies of pairs of Li electrodes treated identically in the same solutions, with the only difference being that one solution was saturated with oxygen, revealed that the presence of 02 (even in such low concentrations) influences the Li surface chemistry in alkyl carbonates and ethereal solutions [19,176],... [Pg.341]

C02 dissolved in organic polar aprotic solutions reacts with lithium to form surface Li2C03. The coproduct is probably CO [219], The mechanism is shown in Scheme 10 [220], One of the sources of C02 in organic polar aprotic systems is the solvent s decomposition. For instance, drying alkyl carbonates such as EC or PC on activated alumina leads to their decomposition to C02 and derivatives... [Pg.341]

In this section we mention several solvents that were not covered in the previous sections and which are of some importance to this field. Three important organic polar aprotic solvents—acetonitrile (AN), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and... [Pg.342]
