Options definition

The preceding definitions of economic potential and total annual cost can be simplified if it is accepted that they will be used to compare the relative merits of difierent structural options in the flowsheet and difierent settings of the operating parameters. Thus items which will be common to the options being compared can be neglected. 

In the definition phase options are narrowed down and a preferred solution is proposed. The project becomes better defined in terms of what should be built and how it should be operated, and an assessment of how the project may be affected by changes beyond the control of the company (for example the oil price) should be made. Normally a clear statement should be prepared, describing why the option is preferred and what project specifications must be met, to be used as a basis for further work. 

Both those methods look pretty equal to Strike. Still, Strike tends to think that the Method I looks like it s the best of the two. SCREEN allows for the selection of urban or rural dispersion coefficients. The urban dispersion option is selected by entering a U (lower or upper case) in column 1, while the rural dispersion option is selected by entering an R (upper or lower case) in column 1. Determination of the applicability of urban or rural dispersion is based upon land use or population density. In general, if 50 percent or more of an area 3 km around the source satisfies the urban criteria (Auer, 1978), the site is deemed in an urban setting. Of the two methods, the land use procedure is considered more definitive. 

Usually, a precise definition of the input parameters in absolute terms is very difficult. Nevertheless, in many cases this does not cause crucial problems because relative results may be sufficient to compare different design options. On April 8, 2003, U.S. EPA proposed to add benzene and 2-ethoxyethanol to the list of solvents whose mixtures with wastewater are exempted from the definition of hazardous waste.23 U.S. EPA is proposing to provide flexibility in the way compliance with the rule is determined by adding the option of directly measuring solvent chemical levels at the headworks of the wastewater treatment system. Whether a molecular weight is "low" or "moderate" involves personal judgment. To make use of these rules, the ES will need to have a precise definition of these words, in terms of some range of molecular weights. We shall see in the next chapter what options exist if an exact definition is not available.

I think Rich I agree more than we disagree. If you use his definition of validation then what he says follows. However, that definition is not the one in common use - the MUCH more common definition is simply the one that tells you to separate your calibration samples keep some out of the calibration calculations, then use those to validate. Once you ve gone to the trouble to collect data over time then your options expand greatly. Not only can you use that data for ongoing validation, you can also include those new readings in the calibration calculations. There are at least two ways to do this ...
