Finally, we briefly mention several other ANNs that have seen limited chemical applications. A connectionist hyperprism ANN has been used in the analysis of ion mobility spectra. This network shares characteristics of Kohonen and backpropagation networks. The DYSTAL network has been successfully used to classify orange juice as either adulterated or unadulte-rated.200 A learning vector quantizer (LVQ) network has been used to identify multiple analytes from optical sensor array data. A wavelet ANN has been applied to the inclusion of P-cyclodextrin with benzene derivatives, anj a... [Pg.100]

The future development of smart sensor design is expected to provide an additional control with which to enhance selectivity. This will be achieved by creating optical micro-arrays of QDs that have different surface functionalities and sizes on nanopore array platforms that incorporate a temperature gradient. Pattern recognition with a multivariate data analysis tool will facilitate QD-based sensing technology for gas detection of high speciation and a sensitive manner for real-world applications. [Pg.349]

The potential for using multiplexed single-photon counting to acquire fluorescence lifetime data from a distributed array of optical fiber sensors, each sensing a different analyte, has recently been demonstrated by Birch etal.(39,47) Figure 12.9 illustrates such a network to be used in conjunction with the arrangement shown in Figure 12.6. [Pg.389]

Laser Fluorimeter As 2i source of biological information we propose the use of a multi-station (up to 12 sampling locations) towed sea water laser fluorimeter for water quality analysis specific to selected hydrocarbons which might be present in the area. The laser excites elements of the plankton population and that of calibrated hydrocarbons (e.g. breakdown products of munitions contents) present in the water. The fluorescent spectra are received through a fibre optic cable, split and counted through specific filters. From this data a direct correlation of the effects of pollution on the plankton population can be made. The system would be towed in conjunction with the multi-sensor towed array. [Pg.81]
