A challenge related to the problems of reactor design and engineering is the modehng and study of the fundamental chemistry occtrrring in manufactrrring processes for semiconductors, optical fibers, magnetic media, and interconnection. 

All of our natural experience with optics occurs in the linear domain. In order to apply nonlinear optics in practice, light must first interact with the NLO material. In our laboratories, free space interconnections are usually employed for this purpose. That is, a laser beam is aimed at the material under examination. In any practical use of NLO, such simplistic solutions will not be possible, for reasons both of safety and rugged construction of the device. Light will need to be moved around in space within the device. In many second order devices, whether they are color-specific lasers, such as doubled diode or YAG lasers, or EO modulators such as spatial light modulators (SLM s) waveguide or fiber optic connections will be used. Aspects of these materials will not be reviewed. 

The innovative thermostated separation system published by de Bokx et al. [17] represents an interesting example and comprises a capillary cross intersection for sample injection and a 100 pi fluorescence detector cell based on fiber optics. This apparatus shows basically all features that are required to perform automated fast and efficient electrophoretic separations and has been used to separate a mixture of laser dyes in 35 seconds with moderate efficiency. However, in order to keep all dead volumes at the junctions sufficiently small, the connections had to be done by tedious laser-based drilling of holes through the capillary walls. A similar approach to interconnect capillaries was described for a postcolumn derivatization reactor for CE [18], and many more inventive capillary coupling devices have been designed. 

The main application of amorphous perfluoropolymers is as cladding of optical fibers, antireflective coatings, low dielectric coatings, and in the electronic industry (e.g., photoresists)1012 and as a low-dielectric-constant insulator for high-performance interconnects.13... 

Fiber optic cables are especially suited for high speed data transmission. The new FDDI ( Fiber Distributed Data Interconnect ) standard specifies a transmission rate of 100 Mbits/s. The comparison between the Ethernet and FDDI standards are given in Table 9.3.

Single mode glass fiber is widely used in the trunk area of the telecommunication system and the optical fiber system is expected to extend to the subscriber area and the network in building, offices, and homes. However, use of the single mode glass fiber system in short distance network is not necessarily suitable because it requires the precise handling and connection due to the small core size (5-10 [im) and thus it would be expensive in broadband residential area network, ATM-LAN, interconnection, etc. In contrast, polymer optical fiber (POP) which has more than 500 jim of core is promising candidate to solve such problems.
