The samples were collected from the cathodes 2.5 cm away from the current collector tab, washed in pure dimethyl carbonate (DMC), and soaked in DMC for 30 minutes after removal from Li-ion cells inside an argon-filled glove box. This procedure removed electrolyte salt from the electrode to prevent its reaction with air and moisture. An integrated Raman microscope system Labram made by ISA Groupe Horiba was used to analyze and map the cathode surface structure and composition. The excitation source was an internal He-Ne (632 nm) 10 mW laser. The power of the laser beam was adjusted to 0.1 mW with neutral filters of various optical densities. Various terms for characterizing light absorption can be found in the literature. The recommendations of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC)3 are very helpful here. Emulsion Stability. The stability of the emulsions was determined by measuring optical density of the solutions following centrifugation. Attenuated total internal reflection (ATR) probes offer several advantages over other probe types. ATR is a phenomenon that relies on a difference in the index of refraction of a crystal and that of the solution with which it is in contact to prevent light from escaping the crystal. Only the evanescent wave of the light interacts with the solution layer at the crystal face. The result is an optical pathlength of only a few microns. HP has developed, in partnership with International Paper, what they call Paper Enhancement Technology. This development, practically, uses a T)i-component" ink approach by introducing a "fixer" on top of the paper to react with the colorant in ink, fix it and keep it near the paper surface. Quantitation may be done crudely on the spots separated by planar chromatographic techniques such as TLC or slab gel electrophoresis (see Chapter 13).
