The examples of the second category of devices will be guided-wave optics, in which successive deposition of L-B films can be used to fabricate a waveguide or a composite waveguide. The role of microoptics is then believed to be not as a substitute for other components such as guided-wave optic components or fiber optic circuits, but for the purpose of fully utilizing these optical systems more effectively by cooperating with them. It is hoped that some more modern concepts will evolve to integrate microoptic devices without leaving them as old discrete optics. The system in Fig. 61 is typical of a hybrid opto-electronic neural network [71], It could equally well be implemented with optical fibers or other guided wave optics.
