In other cases, the hazard may not be as clearly explained. For instance, you may find under potential health effects, a section entitled Inhalation, which explains that the inhalation of vapors irritates the respiratory tract or that exposure can cause respiratory tract and throat irritation. It is easy to deduce that this chemical is an irritant. But it may go further and say that overexposure or high concentrations may cause central nervous system depression, unconsciousness, respiratory failure, and death. These are toxic effects. It may also use medical terms that you may not understand or be famiUar with, such as narcosis, dyspnea, asphyxia, or emphysema. Sometimes the use of these terms can be confusing and you may want to seek help to understand what these mean. Nevertheless, what you should notice is that the harmful effects progress from relatively minor to sometimes more serious as exposure increases. 

Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Mine Safety, the online glossary contains thousands of terms related mainly to coal mining.

This easy to use two-volume handbook presents chemical safety and health information on nearly 1500 toxic and hazardous chemicals. The utility of the 4th edition has been enhanced by addition of eight appendices five cross index chemicals by CAS number, molecular formula, synonyms and trade names, DOT ID, and RTECS one is a glossary of terms used one lists oxidant chemicals and one contains a list of confirmed and suspected carcinogens.
