The Web sites for online MCS support groups, e-mail lists, news-groups and chat rooms change from time to time. Those listed here were current at the time of publication. The best way to locate online support is to visit MCS-related Web sites that provide links. SNSs have existed since 1997 and developed with increasing speed in the middle part of the decade (Boyd Ellison, 2008). SNSs are distinct from other web sites because they allow individuals to (1) constmct a public or semi-public profile within a bounded system, (2) articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection, and (3) view and traverse their list of connections and those made by others within the system (Boyd Ellison, 2008 211). Users define an online persona and identify contacts publicly for others to see. SNSs often integrate other communication features including e-mail, chat, and photo and video sharing for example. 

When the course was delivered online, the lecture s topic was presented to the students using the online learning environment. The students had a week to read the material and to prepare the tasks. On Thursdays they met in a chat session to discuss the topic. The completed tasks were sent to the tutor using web mail. The chat sessions were scheduled for Thursday evenings and lasted for two to three hours depending on how many questions the students had. 

Vast new datasets are available for social scientists to analyze with the increasing use of internet technologies. Email clients, instant messenger and chat photo sharing and peer-to-peer file exchange open-source programming platforms and online editable encyclopedias such as wikipedia—all give social scientists ready-to-analyze data about how people communicate and collaborate. 

The online portion of the course was conducted using El-Irrminate Live . This software package uses a relatively small bandwidth, and thus was adaptable to the limited internet system in Vietnam. And because it is a resomce supported by Baylor, it was available at no additional cost or service fee. The Elluminate Live system permits PowerPoint slides to be downloaded, students to ask ques-tiorrs using their microphone/headphone or via a chat box, and for the professor to be viewed and heard, and other featrrres.
