Whereas ATR spectroscopy is most commonly applied in obtaining infrared absorption spectra of opaque materials, reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) is usually used to obtain the absorption spectrum of a thin layer of material adsorbed on an opaque metal surface.
