One aspect of cleaning that can save considerable time and energy is remembering that like dissolves like. Polar solvents can dissolve polar contamination far more effectively than can nonpolar solvents. In addition, proper selection of solvent material can avoid damaging the object you want to clean as well as preventing the introduction of possibly hazardous materials. A rather unusual test is to tap the plastic firmly with a fingernail. If the sound is metallic, the plastic is likely to contain polystyrene. Hardness is another property that can be roughly tested with a fingernail applied to the underside of an object. Plastics which can be marked with a fingernail include polyethylene, polypropylene, plasticised PVC and polyurethane other types are not affected. 

A survey of plastics-containing objects in the British Museum and the National Museum of Denmark showed that 1% of objects were actively deteriorating and were in immediate need of conservation, while 12% exhibited deterioration and required cleaning, stabilising and repair. All the acute objects contained cellulose nitrate, cellulose acetate, plasticised PVC or polyurethane foam. Most objects (60%) were defined as being of low conservation priority, that is, they were in a stable condition but needed some treatment such as cleaning. Only just over one quarter required no conservation treatment. In general, deterioration of plastic objects in museums is visible within 5-25 years of collection. 

The adverse health effects of plastics containing phthalates has prompted the EU to ban DBP, BBP, DEHP, DOP, DINP, and DIDP in baby toys that may be introduced into the mouths of children under three years.In addition, several proposals for the prohibition of DEHP use in medical materials have been made. In 1998, the Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Northeast Atlantic established the objective of eliminating the emissions and release of all hazardous substances into the environment by 2020, including DBP and DEHP in the list of chemicals for priority action. The EU has also included DEHP in the list of 33 substances of... 

Plastics are generally organic polymers of high molecular mass. They are usually synthetic and derived from petrochemicals. Also they are malleable and can be molded into solid objects of various shapes. Most plastics contain other organic or inorganic compounds that are blended in. These include fillers which improve performance and may reduce production costs. One such additive might be a fire retardant to lower the flammability of the material. Another could be a colorant to enhance its appearance. Figure 3 displays a plastic vase [13]. 

The drop impact test is ideal for measuring impact resistance of materials or parts that will be used in a fashion in which they could either be hit with a sharp object (a hammer, for example) or dropped (a plastic container, for example). ASTM D2463 describes a drop impact test for a blow-molded container. 

The Fe, Co, and Ni deposits are extremely fine grained at high current density and pH. Electroless nickel, cobalt, and nickel—cobalt alloy plating from fluoroborate-containing baths yields a deposit of superior corrosion resistance, low stress, and excellent hardenabiUty (114). Solder is plated ia solutioas containing Pb(Bp4)2 and Sn(Bp4)2 thus the lustrous solder-plated object is coated with a Pb—Sn alloy (118). 

A variety of containment strategies employ floating solid objects to control the rate of gaseous emissions from surface impoundments. These include synthetic membrane covers, rafts, and hollow plastic spheres. Synthetic membrane covers are feasible where the out-gassing of volatiles due to biological activity is not expected. In judging whether or not petroleum ether should be added, the following rule should be observed Add enough petroleum ether to soften the cineol arsenate, so as to obtain a plastic mass the quantity necessary never exceeds 5 c.c., and decreases vsith oils containing less than 80 per cent, of cineol. The object of adding petroleum ether is merely to soften the hard mass and to aid in the separation of non-cineol constituents of the oil a large excess of petroleum ether will decompose the compound. 

Material recycling is the objective for every material, but at some point reuse or collection, separation and further recycling will no longer yield a useful product. The so-called plastic waste still contains a high calorific value which can be recovered to produce heat or electricity. Even better it may be possible to recover the chemical feedstock originally manufactured from oil. These two possibilities are reviewed.
