Recent advances in biotechnology have resulted in improved fermentation processes for the production of useful chemical intermediates. One such process was developed a few years ago during the U.S. DOE sponsored CRADA (Cooperative Research and Development Agreement) with Applied Carbochemicals (ACC). Under this CRADA a consortium of four national labs including Argonne National Laboratory (ANL), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), and Pacific... [Pg.145]

UTM-TOX. The Unified Transport Model for Toxicants (UTM-TOX, 52) was developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) on the base of the ORNL Unified Transport Model (UTM), itself under development from the early 1970 s. UTM-TOX includes air, water, and terrestrial submodels. The aquatic fate submodel includes volatilization, hydrolysis, biolysis, photolysis, and sorption equilibria. Sorbed phases are assumed unreactive in the 1982 version. [Pg.37]

A variety of techniques for the detection of extremely low levels of stable or radioactive substance at the one-atom level are being developed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) [l]2. Such methods are in great demand for research on the sun, the ocean, and the earth. To meet these demands for ultrasensitive detection, ORNL is now engaged in an effort that represents substantial involvement with other laboratories. Some of these... [Pg.153]

In the spring of 2002, the research group of Oak Ridge National Laboratory [ORNL] has reported [1] that if USW is irradiated on deuterated acetone (C3D60), nuclear emission is observed and the thermonuclear reactions ... [Pg.7]

One typical example of carbon/carbon composite plates is that made by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in the United States [12]. The composite preform was fabricafed by a slurry-molding process from fhe mixed slurry befween short carbon fibers (graphite fibers were also added in some sample plates) and fhe phenolic resin. The mass rafio between fiber reinforcement and phenolic matrix is 4 3. The phenolic matrix improves the mechanical properties and dimensional stability of the plate. A subsequent vacuum molding process was utilized to fabricate composite plates and fluid fields with relatively high resolution (Figure 5.3, [11]). [Pg.317]

Sheng Dai, leader of Nanomaterials Chemistry Group and senior research scientist at Chemical Sciences Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and adjunct professor at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville (UTK), received his PhD in chemistry from UTK in 1990. He has authored or coauthored more than 180 peer-reviewed journal or book publications. He currently holds five U.S. patents. His research interest includes chemical synthesis of novel materials, separation, catalysis, sensor development, and molecular recognition. Many of these publications are in the area of ionic liquids. [Pg.403]

Modeling Intakes. To determine the significance of diet and inhalation as sources of internally deposited U and Th, dietary and inhalation estimates for the general population were used in an Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) model, INREM II (7). A schematic of the intake and deposition pathways considered by the model are depicted in Fig. 1. Uranium in the typical diet is about... [Pg.242]
