Some methods that paitly cope with the above mentioned problem have been proposed in the literature. The subject has been treated in areas like Cheraometrics, Econometrics etc, giving rise for example to the methods Partial Least Squares, PLS, Ridge Regression, RR, and Principal Component Regression, PCR [2]. In this work we have chosen to illustrate the multivariable approach using PCR as our regression tool, mainly because it has a relatively easy interpretation. The basic idea of PCR is described below. [Pg.888]

Bikerman [182] criticized the derivation of Eq. X-18 out of concern for die ignored vertical component of On soft surfaces a circular ridge is raised at the periphery of a drop (see Ref. 67) on harder solids there is no visible effect, but the stress is there. It has been suggested that the contact angle is determined by the balance of surface stresses rather than one of surface free energies, the two not necessarily being the same for a... [Pg.373]

The rupture process of a soap film is of some interest. In the case of a film spanning a frame, as in Fig. XIV-15, it is known that rupture tends to originate at the margin, as shown in the classic studies of Mysels [207, 211]. Rupture away from a border may occur spontaneously but is usually studied by using a spark [212] as a trigger (a-radia-tion will also initiate rupture [213]). An aureole or ridge of accumulated material may be seen on the rim of the growing hole [212, 214] (see also Refs. 215, 216). Theoretical analysis has been in the form of nucleation [217, 218] or thin-film instability [219]. [Pg.523]

In the case of a porous medium the characteristic difficulties of the intermediate case can be circumvented by a device originally introduced by Maxwell [16] and later exploited in some detail by workers from Oak. Ridge National Laboratory and the University of Maryland [I ]—[21]. The idea was stated very succinctly by Maxwell as follows. "We may suppose the action of the porous material to be similar to that of a number of particles, fixed in space and obstructing the motion of the particles of the moving systems". ... [Pg.18]

The polyethylene crystals shown in Fig. 4.11 exist as hollow pyramids made up of planar sections. Since the solvent must be evaporated away prior to electron microscopic observation, the pyramids become buckled, torn, and/ or pleated during the course of sample preparation. While the pyramidal morphology is clearly evident in Fig. 4.1 la, there is also evidence of collapse and pleating. Likewise, the ridges on the apparently planar crystals in Fig. 4.1 lb are pleats of excess material that bunches up when the pyramids collapse. [Pg.240]
